Close To Home | Our family lived in Central Illinois while growing up in the 50's. I started driving a Ford 8N when only 5yrs old [all my brothers did too, 5 of them]. There was a neighbor I worked for that had a Farmall C that he gave me to work with on his place. He was a vet just back from Nagasaki when he bought the C new. It turned out to be the only new one he owned. I worked on a lot of farms during summer vacation but always liked to work for Joe because I liked that tractor. He demised at a young age due to cancer from radiation exposure in Japan. His son decided to give up farming in '87 and get a town job. He still had the C. At the auction I was interested in the C but I found out how popular they were then and still are. With a small loan from my brother the day of the sale, I got the tractor I wanted and still have it today. It has an easy life now, just mowing or giving rides to my children and grand children and others who occassionally ask. My home now is only 1 mile from Joe's where I drove it when I was a teenager.
