NO. If it doesn't have that plate it is a WD45 engine or some other engine other then the WD/WC engine

All WD and earlier 201s had the plate. Once the foundry switched to the newer non plate block it was also shipped as a replacement part thus there are a lot of WCs and WDs with the non plate blocks

Ah but the replacement engine wasn't a true WD/WC engine it was the new improved WD45 engine wasn't it??

To a purest no, externally. But the replacement block could purchased bare and be fitted with all the 4 stroke WD parts thus the displacement and output remained same. Or it could be purchased a complete 45 engine. In
Our 48WD has a late unumbered replacement block with no side plate, WD crankshaft, tall D-17 head that takes the long plugs, Its a mutt,LOL

Once the WD45 block was created in mid-1953, the older WC-WD-WF block was discontinued and REPLACED by the newer casting. Why would they make two castings when one would fill the bill?? They DIDN"T.

We bought a 1941 WC from the original owner’s son. It had the original block freeze damaged back in the late 50 s and the dealer put all the original 201 parts in the new replacement 45 type block. We had a WD45 with a cracked block. So we built a 240 inch engine using the crankshaft, etc. from the WD45 in this replacement block. We used the "tall" 45 head, manifolds, carburetor, and distributor and put it in one our pulling WCs.

So if your a purest then using the replacement block that was the new improved WD45 block then it would not be purest correct for a WD. RIGHT

Let's put it ths way; it could be "historically" correct if the block had been replaced with a new one from an A-C dealer. The original engine number was supposed to be transferred to the blank boss on the new block but that probably didn't always happen if ever.

Yes, as has been stated 3 or 4 times already. However the late replacement block does in itself make it a WD45 engine as you suggested earlier. That takes a WD45 crankshaft, pistons, cylinder head, intake, carburetor, air cleaner and maybe a couple other things I forgot. In addition all of the WD45 specific parts can also be fitted to the side plate block which then will WD 45 performanace. Its the internals that give WD or 45 performance. Not the block.

It being a WD45 or WD as for HP depends on how things are put in it. I.E. if you use the WD parts it would be around 34HP and if you used the WD45 parts around 45hp right?
