Here is a wiring diagram or go to parts and pieces in the column on the left of the screen to view.

The wire from the A on the generator goes to the "GEN" terminal on the cutout. The wire from the F terminal on the generator goes to the light switch resistor. I have never seen a Delco cutout with three terminals. They only have two. Are you sure it"s a cutout and not a voltage regulator?

a cutout has 2 wires, G and F because there is only one coil inside the box. a voltage regulator has 3 or 4 wires, G and F and a Battery line since it has 3 coils inside. the regulator does not need the light switch, the resistor on the light switch is replaced by one of the relays inside the regulator. ----- ----B is battery, from the ampmeter. G is the Armature (A) terminal on the generator. F is Field or ground wire. you dont need a light switch. If you ground the F terminal and reasure the voltage between the A and F terminals on the generator, you can check its operation. the regulator is there to adjust the voltage and current output. make sure the F is grounded to a clen unpainted bolt., just like the battery ground terminal

Was happy to see diagram that was posted in this thread. I am getting a negative charge indicated on my ammeter and am wondering how to check ehat the problem is and fix it. Would greatly appreciate advice.

amp meter running backward might mean the wires are just reversed. is it actually charging or is it discharging? ground the F terminal on the gnerator, connect the A terminal to the ampmeter then to battery. it should read zero, then go up and charge several amps after startup. if it is doing this, but the wrong way, you probalby have the wires switched. turn on lights with the motor off, amp meter should discharge??
