Here is a pic of something that followed me home the other day:

I'd been looking for one for quite a while. This one came with a new engine from Cummins, almost new rear tires, and a 3 point, so I am really tickled to get it!

I've always like Versatiles... They are built tough where it counts and are easy to work on.

My late Uncles bought a 145 brand new, and I later inherited it, and (stupidly) sold it.

It was serial # 69008... the 8TH tractor produced in 1969.

I later bought another 145, but I don't have the serial number at hand. It has a sorry wooden cab on it.

We upgraded our tractor's V8-470 to a V8-504.

What engine do you have, POSSIBLY a "triple nickel"?

Well like you said Howard there are different theories. My cousin who is a shop foreman at a truck shop said the 903 cummins never stood up in semis because of all the idling around. He told dad when he got the first 900 to let them warm up for a few minutes and get them working. Never had any engine trouble with any of the versatiles but we only put a few hundred hours on each one each year. They were all bought used at auction sales and no major issues to speak of. Like you said the sleeves are the weak spot on the 6 cylders, and dads 800 will leak some anti freeze over the winter into the oil, so we just drain it out before we start in the spring, i am guessing the sleeve seals are starting to leak a little, but other wise it works fine. We dont overload them other than that i dont have any answers either. I have always heard the v8 cummins were poor engines, but we have had good luck with them. If you rebuild the exhaust i would recommend going with larger diamater pipes, it limits your visibility some but it will have a much better sound. One of dads 900s has 3" pipes and the other has 4.5" and the bigger ones are much quieter and sound a lot better. Good luck with your 145, it looks like a good one.

Hi David -

A little of both - it is in such good shape, I won't have to do much to it - but will fix up all the little things - and the exhaust pipes...

All I farm now is 80 acres of dryland - which out here is not much more than a small garden...

I hope to find a Versatile sweep plow to go behind it - I had a 9 x 6, 54 foot Versatile sweep that went with my 895 Versatile back when I was farming.

yes it certainly is in great shape.I don't know where you are but your climate is kind .Here where I live in Nova Scotia its hard keeping things looking good even when they are kept inside.I have always liked the smaller articulated tractors.I bought a MF 1505 few years back and restored it,but really didn't have a use for it so I sold it after about a year of playing around.Have fun with your new toy!!

Thats a nice looking versatile, never seen a 145 with a 3pt before, my cousin has one that he uses for dozer work. Dad has four of them 2 900s,850, and an 800. Simple, tough machines, just don't make em like that now days.

What does your Dad think is the key to long life on the V8 Cummins??

I've heard lots of theories - but you know how coffee shop theories are... Never know who really knows their stuff and who is just wasting oxygen...

Seems like the biggest weak point on those 855 Cummin 6-cylinders is letting the water get weak and electrolysis eat up the cylinders.

I can't get over how this one sounds like a jet winding up at about 3500 RPM compared to my old 895 that runs along at 2000 or so tops speed...

Nice looking tractor and look's like it's ready to work. I would like to been able to hook it to this vehicle for drawbar pull. Hal

Ha! This old girl is only rated at 145 hp...

Maybe it and my old 365 hp 895 together (I had to replace the engine and that bigger engine was all Cummins had on the shelf) might stand a chance against your truck!

We used that for drawbar pull mostly on tanks such as the M88 Recovery vehicle, M60 Tank and the M1A1 Abrams Tank. Hal

The engines in the picture are 500hp Ford engines.
Each engine has twin 4 barrel carburetors and they're electric drive. Each engine has a big generator mated to it similar to used on a locomotive. In 1965 they were converted to V8 Cummins diesels, but there's was vibration so Cummins said when the generator were mated to their engines and they cut the max engine speed to 2200rpms. They gave good service, but they never had the power like the Fords did when towing a tank. Cummins were breaking crankshafts on some of their engines, we never had that problem.

In 1978 they had a larger Field Dynamometer known as the M16 built near Chicago. The one in the picture was known as the M7. The M16 had an EMD 2 cycle 1600 hp diesel installed and at that time was owned by General Motors. The engine only turn 900rpm's and sounded like a jet engine on takeoff.. That same engine was used in tugboats and switcher engines in a rail yard.
This was a V8 engine and they made a V16 for locomotives. We could hold a vehicle pulling 100000 pounds of pull on a drawbar pull test. Hal

Hi Schrocky -

Do you know Jerrod Pakosh?? Or know of him?

Him or Don Wadge (who posts on here sometimes - or I have his email, if you need it) might know. Seems like Versatile bought most parts of that sort off someone else's shelf - if you could just cross the parts over to where they came from...

Shoot me an email at howardh at opsu.edu, if you don't mind...

Thanks,
Howard
