1953 sm (grounding)

just restored a 1953 super m when pulling heavy the motor breakes up real bad. i've had people tell me it's a ground problem (painted under steer post when it was disassembled!!! is their a better way to ground the tractor !!! battery is ubder the seat, and it grounds thru the barrey box to the top plate !!! thank's for any inquires !!!!
