I have a cub lowboy (1966) that I use to cut the grass. first, and reverse gears were very noisy so I replaced them, also put in a new second gear and replaced all the bearings, re-shimmed the crown/pinion. the sevice book says to use hy-trans fluid but I was thinking about using gear oil instead, the hy-trans seems very light. Also since the gears were very worn it appears that maybe the lubricant wasn't up to the job? Would gear oil be to heavy? Most other older tractors use gear oil in their transmissions and differentials without problems. Has any one used synthetic gear oil? It also appears that cubs are prone for transmission problems (noise) is the hy-trans at fault? Thanks for any input.
