Pretty darn critical. Sources generally are: Depending on what your working on: Liner o-rings, oil cooler, cracked head, head gasket, water pump. Wtaer pump can only occur with a gear drive pump, or a pump with force fed lube. Externally mounted belt drives normally can't let water get to the oil. Does the engine white smoke when starting it after it's been shut down over night? If so then this tells you the coolant is getting into the combustion chamber somehow. if it's a gas engine, look at the spark plugs real close. A really clean spark plug is also an indicator of coolant. Simply not enough info to help you through this in detail.
