JohnDeere 950 not lifting

I recently bought a JD 950 at auction with a noisy tranny ( 4-SPEED, Hi/Lo ) with no fluid showing on the dipstick. the lift did operate. After adding a gallon of fluid, the lift stopped working.The lift lever always springs up to the top position. I don!t know if that is SOP, but the lift remains frozen in the top position. There is gasket cement residue that makes it appear that the tractor was worked on. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks S.J.
