Lost my rear hydraulics and Pto

My leyland 270 stripped out the pto gear on the shaft. I read a post recently about cleaning the system with kerosene. What about diesel? I have a manual on the way from Monty at Anglo American services. While I am waiting I thought I would do a little cleaning. This is my first time to do major repair and for the Leyland owners, parts are coming from England. I am concerned about the case and parts forming surface rust while we are waiting. It probably is going to be a couple of weeks before I get parts and put it back together. What do you think about letting the diesel sit in the case to prevent rust. Thanks
