AC 160 Hydraulic ???

I just bought an AC 160. The owner before last put a small stop cock valve on the discharge side of the the hyd pump. Aparrantly this was done because it needs to be vented in order to get the pump to "pick up" the fluid from the tranny. When this stop cock is opened, in about 15 seconds, the fluid will come squirting out, I shut the stop cock, and it seems to operate OK. Here's the question. Is the pump shot, or is there an air leak in the system allowing the pump prime to drop back down to the sump when the unit is shut down? From what I understand about positive displacement pumps (gear) it shouldn't need to be primed, and should draw its own prime. But, I haven't known everything since I was about 18, so...I don't want to spring for a new /rebuilt pump if it could be something else. There are no big leaks in the system, just a small weep at this stop cock. Also, the book(I&T shop service manual) says this thing uses SAE 10W-30 API class "DM", or "MS" for hyd/trans fluid. Is the stuff that Central tractor sells that says it replaces AGCO power fluid 821 XL, and Allis-Chalmers power fluid 821 acceptable? Thanks for the answer(s).
