Larry, If you are using Champion spark plugs throw them away. Replace with something else and do what Dick L. says. I had been using the Champion plugs on a couple of these tractors and all had misses, poofs, etc. Talking at the barber shop one day and all in attendance said that the plugs were the problem. Changed them out and had to readjust carberator and linkage.(Ran great, big differance). Checked article archives here and comments were similar. Don't mean to dog Champion just my 2 cents.

Changing plug brands is certainly worth a try. A few years back I had a miss in my truck under loak. I went carzy looking for the cause. Cap, rotor, wires, egr, timming, filters, and a bunch of other stuff I probably forgot now. I had put in new AC plugs not long ago so I didn't change them, couldn't be the problem right, well I finally put in a set of Champion's and it has run beautiful since. Which engine you ask, a 86 Dodge slant six. Different engines like different pulgs, here is a perfect example of that.

Sounds to me like manifold gasket leaks or carb to manifold gasket leaks.

Sounds like you need to adjust the idle screw. They will run wide open with the idle screw in your pocket.

What I mean is that when you are running the tractor much past an idle the adjustment of the idle screw is out of play. You can have it set any where and it will run at a high speed but if not set properly will not idle.
Was it running before you rebuilt the carb?
If it was not, What carb is on it? When you rebuilt it was all the jets removed?
Is the power jet adjustable?

Dick I bought this tractor ,not running! I can not see the tag on the carb. as it is installed now,but i think it was tsx-154. All jets were removed and carb. soaked for 2 days in 1 gallon can of cleaner bought at parts store for carbs.,then was flushed out and sprayed again with spray cans of carb. cleaner, blown out with air and assembled!
I'll try again soon adjusting it.Also it has new manifold gasket and head rebuilt.Oh! it does not have a adjustable Main jet

Start by turning the main jet all the way in and back out 2 turns. Then turn the idle screw all the way in and back out 1 1/2 turns. It should start and run at those settings. Set the stop screw on the throttle arm at the back of the carb at where it will just stay running with the gas lever all the way off. Don't worry about the main jet untill you get the idle set. Adjust the idle screw slowly untill it runs best then back off the stop screw untill it will just stay running then slowly readjust the idle screw. Repete untill you have the desired idle speed. If the carb is clean as well as the gas line and tank, you should be ok. After you have the idle speed you can run the engine wide open and set the main power jet to where you get the highest RPM. This will be the best you can do without being under load.

Saw a Ford 8N do that once. after overhaul of the carburetor they guy had hooked the throttle cable to the choke arm on the carb and vise versa. It would only start with full throttle and no choke, which was actually choke and low throttle. Dont know if that can happen on CA, but might be worth checking. Have seen tractors with throttle arm upside down also.
