Have a 1950 Model B.

Recently, the clutch will not disengage. The transmission gears continue to turn after the clutch lever is pressed in. Grinds the gears a lot. Even engaging the PTO prior to starting doesn't cause the clutch to release when the pedal is pushed in. The PTO/pulley continues to turn. Have to stop tractor, put in gear and restart. Occasionally it works OK, but not always. Something is wrong or out of adjustment.

Any suggestions on adjustments or does the clutch sound shot?

Thanks

I had that exact thing happen to my '47 B. sometimes the clutch would break loose but most time it would want to keep on going. putting it in gear from neutral was nearly impossible. I took it apart and it was definately oil on the clutch. i replaced the rear main seal, and also the clutch while I was in there and it works fine! Replace that rear main seal this winter because that scratching will tear your gears up eventually!

Rick i have had exactly the same problem. Remove your starter then take a can of carb or brake cleaner and have someone depress your clutch.Spray the cleaner thoroughly on clutch and flywheel.Apparently you have a rear main seal leaking or leaked sometime earlier. In time the oil becomes very sticky and believe me it doesnt take much to create this problem. If this fixes your problem please post it to let me know, hope this was help.

occasionally it works o.k.?? maybe it is something failed in the clutch, or you did recent work and out of adjustment?? my first thought was that this is not uncommon for clutch to stick after setting for a couple weeks. mine does it also. have to stomp the brakes, or back up to a wall and then start tractor in reverse with clutch in. after mine "pops" it is then o.k. I think the rear seal might get a few drops of oil on the clutch and it makes it "stick". only does it after setting a few weeks.

Had a similar problem, maybe not to the extent you are having it though. The problem turned out to be a pilot bearing that was too small. It would make the tractor just keep on going, and if it released at all the heat from too tight a fit would make it "engage" again. This happened after putting in a new pilot bearing along with a new clutch. Part of the reason for the new clutch (other than it was worn out) was for some reason it wouldn't disengage for a second when depressing the clutch pedal, and as you describe, you couldn't get it to go into gear. Not sure what the problem here was, but with the pilot bearing lapped out with valve grinding compound and the end of the steel clutch alignment tool I made, it now works fine.

Rick,
There should be at least 1 1/4" free play in the clutch pedal movement before the throwout bearing makes contact. To adjust: Remove the small cover from the lower side of the clutch housing and turn each of the adjusting screws until 1/4" clearance is obtained. Adjust each lever exactly the same and tighten the locknuts. Duey
