Just wondering how much oil would be acceptable to put back in my LA's rearend? I know in my JD's I leave the level down a little to save money as well as having oil run out the axle seals. This tractor will probably never work again, but might be used in a pull or two, or parade. I don't want to get too low, just wondered if it could be left down some. Thanks-Bob

I don't have an LA or owner's manual for one. But I do have a 1955 Case 400, and the owner's manual for it actually recommends changing the transmission oil every 1000 hours or annually, whichever comes first! Now, lubricants are a lot better than they were 50 years ago, and I wouldn't think of changing all 17 gallons every year. I'd have to get a second job to afford it!
I did have the transmission cover off for a repair soon after I bought the tractor, and the transmission lube was thick, sticky, smelled bad, and was not greasy between my fingers. Maybe it was the original lube, who knows, but it got drained and flushed and replaced with modern gear lube.

It hold 15 gallons if you put 10 gallons in you will save 5 gallons over the life of the tractor. that's right you may never need to change or add any oil as long as you own it.
I would think the cost of one or two bearings that might not get well oiled would out-weigh the small cost of the oil.
Walt PS why are you changing it does it look good no water or foriegn matter in it or are you just changing it because its old. Old trans oil will outlast you if left in as long as its clean.

Wow! You guys are touchy. The reason I asked is certainly not just an effort to save money. I forgot there is an unlimited supply of oil in the world. The reason I want to change the oil is it is probably 54 years old, has some water in it, and is probably doing as much harm as good. Now if your remarks are implying that all bearings won't get oiled unless full, then that's the answer I was looking for. If it's just a matter of having it full so it can dissapate heat when plowing all day on a 110deg day, then there's no reason to waste extra oil because the tractor won't be working again as long as I have it. On JD's it's common to leave the level down a little to save running out the seals.

I should read my Manual more often, the tranny holds 17 gallons of 140 gear oil 90 in cold climates.

Right on the back of the tranny near the fill plug it says "Maintain oil level and has an arrow pointing at the plug base. In the book another thing to point out is this.
"When doing belt work, we recommend that the tractor be set level so that all bearings, shafts, ect.,will be properly lubricated."
I think that should answer your question as to what level to be maintained.

Not touchy just don't want you to do something that might cause more harm than good. Case trannies need the oil up near the top to oil the bearings. If it has water and looks bad sure change it but fill it right up you may never have to do this again in your lifetime and that will save a lot of oil. If the oil is grey colored then besure to flush the tranny with a good cleaner to get it all out. Let it drain for a few days to make sure you get all the old stuff out.

What you could do is add a quart of LUCAS HUB SEAL,,I use it everything that comes here when I discover it has a leak ,With very good results ,Naturally if you do add this to the Tranny you will want to cruise a while with it to get it mixed in to the seal ,,,If you are parking it and do not intend to pull or show ,,Perhaps things are best left as they are ,,Good luck,JIM
