I haul my pontoon boat from the cottage to the lake on the weakend, its a great tool to put and take out boats,

it is very hilly and I pull the boat with my case tractor, it works very well, but I did notice a nosie?

when going down a steep hill , I would have it in first gear to keep the speed down and because the brakes don't stop like disc brakes, but once or twice I put the clutch peddle down to pick up some speed and I could here a loud screaching sound, it only does this with the cluch pressed and going down hill at a higher speed than that gear is made for,

this happens in first and second
it most likely happens in 3rd and 4th but I'm not willing to go that fast down hill with the clutch in!

any information on this would be of great help

thanks
john from Ontario Canada

if its a lower pitch sound, it may be the roller chains thar drive the tractor. Mine make a growling sound when the gears catch going down a hill, though.

John,
Guess you don't have a operators manual for your tractor. If you did you would know that pushing in the clutch going down hill is a big NO NO. I hope your wife reads this and slaps you silly before that boat knocks you unconscious. Have her give us updates on your recovery while your in he hospital,or in a pine box.

Most likely the noise you are hearing is the belt pulley brake. This is a small brake pad that comes into contact with the belt pulley when you depress the clutch pedal.Check to see if the pad is wore out,and replace if it is.
