I have an old M with a front end loader that is a little tough to steer with a bucket full of snow. I am thinking of adding power steering. Can anyone tell me which is the best kind. How much trouble is it to put on and how much I would expect to pay. Also where could I find one? Thanks.

Larson-Swanson Company at Fort Dodge Iowa used to have a square plate in their catalog that looked like a wedge from the side and had 4 corner holes in it. You placed this between the Steering bolster and the front axle pedestal and it straighten or made the pedestal more perpenticular to the ground to make the tractor steer a little easier. Not as easy as power steering but much easier. Also be sure the lower bolster bearing is clean and greased.

Tom, I added a Char-lynn unit to my '48 M last year. Got it off the YTMAG auction block and only had to replace a couple of gaskets. With this type of mounting there were no hood modifications required. The motor section mounts just ahead of the gauge bracket with the shortened front steering shaft. Works like a dream...one finger steering!

I just bought a "M' and would like to add power steering. I picked up a used power steering motor assembly. The guy told me I could hook it up to my existing hydraulics that run my loader. There are four ports on the motor, I can identify 2 of the four. One is G1 , and the other is G2. What are the other two ports for and how do you plumb the motor up? Your assistance is appreciated in advance.

Tom - I've put Charlynn PS kits on a couple Super M's. Installation was straightforward, and the steering is powerful and trouble-free.

Click below to for installation instructions and photos of the hydraulic hookup.

Tom W,

The most common aftermarket power steering used is probably Char-Lynn. I have one on my 400 that someone else put on. Good luck in choosing.

Tom if you have some time, type in power steering in the search box and hit the go button. You will find numerous helpful threads on this topic.

Hi Red. I can always count on you for a response. I already did that and most of them were last years. I just thought someone has had more recent experience. Did you ever add power to any of yours?

Afraid not Tom. Sorry I couldn't be of help. I had an IH loader on a rough M at one time. Even Magilla Gorilla had trouble turning the steering wheel. :(
