Can someone tell me what front tire size was original on a 966?

I like how these tractors look with the 10.00 X 16 4 rib tires. I"m pretty sure those tires will fit on the factory rims correct?

Also, how about four rib tires that I believe are the following size: 14.00 X 16.1. These look like wide beefy tires, and maybe good for supporting a loader. Will these fit on the factory rim and still clear the steering spindle?

Thanks

I wouldn't use the 14L x 16.1's. Too tall unless You have 20.8 X 38's on the back of Your 966. The 10.00 X 16 uses an 8X16" rim, and the 11.00X 16 uses a 10 X 16" rim, I could give You IH part numbers from memory from My days of buying tires/rims & wheels at FARMALL but just see Your local C/IH dealer or local tire dealer....Both these wheels were 8-bolt wheels which is important for loader work. If You have factory 15" wheels You have 6-bolt wheels, which I would upgrade to 8-bolt....nothing wrong with the 15" tires however as long as You get 8 ply tires. An 11L x 15" or 12.5L x 15" 8-ply tire would allow Your 966 to sit level and give You a wider foot print... The newer style 4-rib fronts are similar to the 11L x 15" implement tires Dad ran on His 4010-D for years.... The lack of three ribs really didn't effect it's steering performance much.... Old girl pretty much when where it wanted under a hard load.

Factory tires were 15" on the 966 as well as the 1066.

Someone must have changed yours at sometime.

11.00x16 is as wide as you can go on the 1086 but the the dish could be offset more on your rims.

All three of our 1066s came from the factory with 10x16 front tires while our 966 had 9.5x15s. I don't think I've ever seen 15" front tires on a tractor with 8 bolt hubs or any 16" tires wider than a 7.50 on a 6 bolt hub. I think the 10.00-16 is a good size for a loader tractor with 8 bolt hubs and I've heard of alot of bearing and spindle problems on tractors with bigger tires.

Front axles are designed so that a line from the top down through the spindle pivot would extend down to meet the ground at the center of the tire tread. If set up like this, when the wheels are turned, they can pivot on this line. Using larger tires, or more of a rim offset, can move the tire out from this pivot point. When that happens it greatly increases the effort needed to turn the wheels since they now have to move in an arc rather than just pivoting. Also by moving the tires out you greatly increase the load on the wheel bearings because the wheel assembly acts like a lever rather than just pushing straight up through the spindle. Reversing the dish on the wheels and using a loader and you are almost sure to have broken spindles and/or bearing problems.

A larger diameter tire will raise the axle up so that the center line of the spindle moves out from the center of the tractor so that you can now run a wider tire without increasing the load on the spindle or bearings.

So, if I have the factory rims (15"), what's the "beefiest" sized tire I can put on there for the loader support, but will still clear the spindle?

If you get the right offset rim, you can put any size tire on there you want. Heck, I've seen 'em with 20" truck tires before. They look stupid, run uphill all the time, and probably don't steer worth a hoot, but hey, they're cheap.

I see your pic in the other thread. What's wrong with the tires on that 966 now?
