I just got my Grand Dad"s old M (1946 I think) running. It has a miss that I can reduce , but not illiminate by pulling out the choke. Any Ideas

Pull the plugs and keep them in the rite order so you know which cycl they came from. Give them a good look as it just mite answer your questions. While they are out run a compression check this will answer the rest of the puzzle.

I would look for air leaks also. Try tightning all of the bolts and screws that hold the carb together and that hold the carburetor to the manifold. If it hasn't had a "tune up" recently I would change the plugs and wires also. Maybe a new distributor cap and rotor also. These are relatively inexpensive and easy to do things. Dave.

Had the same problem on my H and it was sticky valves. I would tinker with the little stuff first. You'll most likely find the problem there.

On the sticky valve issue; can I assume the valves are sticking open? Question #2 how do you fix that. Much Thanx HicVbob

For the sticky valves. remove valve cover and spray with penitrating oil. Then with tractor running at slow idle stick screwdriver between rocker arm and valve stem. That was a real common problem on F-20s

Playing with the choke rod can mask lots of problems. Most likely the miss has nothing to do with the carburetor. You might have sticking valves, or maybe just improperly adjusted valves. The miss could be a result of worn distributor parts, which is probably the culprit. Could be as simple as faulty spark plugs.

Dear Rusty this may give more insight to the problem. After I get the tractor running somewhat smoother by pulling the choke about half way out I notice the engine will not return to idle even with the throttle pushed full forward. Has muddied the water worse or helped. HickVbob

Hickory valley Bob, I would say that the float is sticking, try tapping on the carb with a screwdriver handle and see if it runs smoother. I say this because you have stated that adjusting the choke affects the way it runs. The next step would be to pull the plugs and clean them and try again.
