The front crank case seal on my H rebuild is causing me some mental activity.

Looking at what I have, there were two seals in there. One of them felt.

The kit people sent me a felt seal to go up there. I pusted, shoved and was gentle with it and still destroyed the holder getting it out.

The seal had a number on it so I went to local seal shop and they cross indexed it to a seal that fits the hole but it is rubber and not felt. it is very narrow and there is room for two of these seals to replace the old thing.

I was wondering out loud if it will be satisfactory for me to replace the felt seal up front with two rubber seals. Anyone have any experience with this? It seems to me that it shoud be ok.

tom, I recall reading about a simalar issue a while back. something about the newer seals were nearly 1/2 the width of the old ones. Cant recall what is was for, but many people suggested 2 seals, however, the issue with that is the outtermost seal will not see any oil, and therefore will wear out in no time. One could conceiveably pack the area between the seals with chassis grease to keep the front seal properly lubed. However, I would do as Owen suggested. He is dead on when it comes to preserving as much of the shaft from rust as possible. Buying one seals also saves you money, and I doubt using 2 seals really has any benefits, as they see the same were, and the outtermost even more.

The original seal in your H was a combination of felt and a leather seal. It is also one of very few applications where the lip of the leather seal faced forward, away from the oil side. The crankcase breather system was designed to create a slight vacuum in the engine crankcase. The lip was installed forwards to prevent dust from being pulled in past the seal. I do not think that you are going to find a replacement like the original.

My guess is that the felt ring you have is for the water pump. Was it a little larger that the the seal OD?

The new "rubber" style seal will seal much better than the orginal one. You can install it with the lip facing the oil and not have any problems. Instead of bottoming the seal in the housing bore I would leave it forward as far as posible and still have it seal on a good surface of the crank pulley. By leaving it forward you will protect more of the pulley sealing surface from rust. If the seal should need to be replaced again in the future it can be installed more toward the back and ride on a surface that is not rusted.

yes I am sure. The rear main felt was split. It is inserted into two pieces (don't know proper name) and then pressed together on assembly of the two pieces.

The one for up front is a solid o-ring of felt. I am still looking...maybe I am trying to put it in the wrong place..but it is slides over the crank?????
