Hey guys, sorry for the dumb question, but I have to ask.
I turned on the lights of my Super M without the tractor running just to see if everything was right. The gauge goes to the positive side. I know that this isn't charging the battery so do I have something hooked up backwards or what.
Thanks for helping out us newbies.

John T as usuall is clear and correct. I will add that if the gauge goes up (lights only), and still farther up with engine ignition turned on, and never goes the other way when started, it is not charging, and needs work on the charging system. let us know. JimN

If the polarity is reversed and its a battery powered coil ignition versus a magneto, the coil polarity wiring ought to match the grounding i.e. if at Pos ground the coils lil + terminal wires to the distributor but if at Neg ground its lil - wires to distributor. The other coil terminal receives input voltage from the ignition switch.

Sounds like EITHER the ammeter is wired bass ackwards (makes it register wrong direction) BUT MORE LIKELY the tractor battery got its polarity changed from Pos to Neg ground at one time and the ammeter leads didnt get reversed as needed to make it register correct.

It can still work n charge at EITHER + or - ground polarity provided the genny was polarized properly and if the ammeter leads were swapped correct it can still register properly.

If she swings to + charge with lights on tractor not running, but then to - discharge running at RPM n the lights get noticeably brighter (batery voltage rises) , sounds like shes charging okay n the ammeter leads just need swapped.
