headgasket and possible rering ??????

Hi folks,
I have a German built model with a 1.8 liter (3 cyl) diesel motor. The headgasket is seeping/leaking oil on the front corner. Couple of questions:

1st, other than the leak, there are no obvious problems with the motor. Think I can get by with just replacing the headgasket (and related gaskets)? Or am I going to have the head planed?

2nd, a sensiuos thought crossed my mind (sense you was doing this, might as well do that). If I decided to turn the head in and have it redone, can finishing the rest (bearings, seals, cylinder sleeves, etc) be taken care of without splitting the tractor? When I look for rings, I only find a complete set of piston, rings, and sleeve. Is it as simple as just sliding the old sleeve out and the new one in?

Or, should I just leave well enough alone until something breaks?

Thanks,

Dave

Just wondering if you checked the torque on the head bolts?

The tractor is a 1964 model and it LOOKS like the engine has not been opened, should I still check it? Is there such a thing such a thing as stop leak that would stop these oil leaks? Reason I'm asking is that I never noticed the leak until Iran a can of motor flush and changed the oil. Thinking I may have washed something out.

Thanks, Dave

The oil galley runs up to the head in the front cornor of the German built engines. Most engines have had a couple of different designs in the head gasket to help seal that area. Unless it was run hot and started leaking, a leak there should not be an indication of any other problems with the gasket.

depends on how much it leaks, if its not enough to cause a financial burden and doesnt seep onto important parts, i would let it go. Pulling the head could open a box of worms, as its hard to say if the head will need resurfaced, then while ur at it might as well might as well... you know how it goes. I dont know enough about these engines to know if they would need split. I dont see how u would get the crank off if it needed turned without removing the flywheel.

Thanks! That's probably the best advice I'll get. It's really not bad. I hit it with a rag now and then and it keeps it from hitting the floor. Guess I should just be glad that's all I have to complain about.

Dave
