Front wheels on a narrow front end H shimmy bad.

My old H's front wheel shimmys something awful when I'm taking a load of manure down the road, I checked it out to find the problem and it appears to me that the steering linkage above the radiator is loose. Got any suggestions as to what the problem might be and what I should do to fix it 'fore I end up in the ditch! LOL

If possible when going down road try and run front wheels on gravel shoulder. They usually don't shimmy on gravel.

All good comments so far, fixing the slop by putting in new bushings is probably the quickest way to fix it. I improved my problem by adding the wedge between the lower bolster and steering shaft, but not by much...

Neil, the major cause of shimmy is your wheels are mounted out of round. Try running one tire up on a board enough to get the other off the ground a little. Give it a little spin and watch it wind down, you will be able to see how far out it is. The heavy side will go to the bottom. Loosen the mounting bolts a little and adjust the wheel to try and balance it out as best you can. Repeat with other tire. If it has front wheel weights take them off, they only make things worse. This is most likely the problem, so before spending a lot of money fixing stuff that may not need fixing try this and see what happens. If it don't help we will go from there.

Get fixed before you haul any more manure on the road. I had an old H that shimmyed, I was idleing down the road, the steering shaft broke and I ended up in the ditch. The tractor was upside down and I was straddling the pto shaft going to the pull type mower. My 1st miracle in life.

I'll try a stab at your shimmy problem since one of my super M's has a tendency to do the same; especially while running her at high throttle settings in highway gear. I believe the steering setup on your H is pretty close to the M.
After removing the grill cowling and right in front of the radiator you will have a "wishbone-looking" steering bolster. Take the cap off the top of this bolster and you should see a ton of grease. Dig out the grease and there will be a half-moon shaped sector gear. My Super M has the round sector gear. You can check this gear for wear. Some of the teeth or grooves are probably a little "wallered-out" where it contacts the worm gear. The worm gear looks like a spiraled macaroni noodle that is attached to your front steering shaft that turns this halfmoon sector gear. It is possibly worn a little also causing the front wheel shimmy problem. I am pretty positive that they make new aftermarket sector gears for the H (since they don't for my Super M). I remember correctly, they range in price from $80-100 new, and quite a bit cheaper if you can find a good used one at a bone yard somewhere.
My Super M has a round sector gear that can be flipped or rotated to the opposite or good unused side. I am just trying to figure out how I can find a tool small enough to pry out the gear since there is not much tolerance, and without having to drop the tower shaft.
Good luck, but I believe by checking wear on these two gears, this should solve your shimmy problem.

if you have a good size 2 jaw gear puller, its not bad to get the gear off. jack up the front of the tractor so the wheels are about an inch off the ground, set the puller up, the feet will grab on the outside of the bolster housing,the center bolt of the puller will go on the the stud sticking thru the gear, put some tension on the bolt and then tap the center bolt of the puller with hammer. couple of whacks and the gear will pop off.

Everything's worn out from 60+ years of use. New parts are not available for the gears. You will need to pull it all apart, replace the bushings in the vertical shaft, and do what it takes to tighten up the gear fit on the top of the shaft (beer can shim).

The worm gear is available from CNH PN 50047DB for $456. The round gear is PN. 50038DB for $243. All three bushings and the thrust bearing and seals are also available but if you bought all the parts the front end would be worth more than the tractor!

It may be true that one could make the front end worth more than the tractor, but how much is one's life worth?

Also, for $864 (bushing set is about $165), if it would repair the front end and make it good for another 60 years or so, that would only cost a person about $14.40 per year or $0.04 per day!

Neil, The cheap patch is to put 40 PSI in one tire and 28 PSI in the other. It won`t fix it but it will stop most shimmys.
