Cost to Paint a Tractor

Just curious as to what it will cost to have my Farmall H painted. I don't have the equipment/time/expertise to do this myself so I will have to hire it out. Sheet metal is very straight so it wouldn't need a lot of body work. I know it will depend on who is doing it but I just wanted to see if I could get a ball park idea before I start trying to find someone.

Like others say, it is a matter of who does it and what you want. I did a Ford last year myself (working tractor), and I just pressure washed it really good, took off the sheet metal, hit a few spots that needed a little sanding and used rattle cans on the sheet metal, and brushed the cast using Rust-Oleum then while the cast was still wet hit it with a rattle can to flow the paint out. Probably looked as good or better than when it was new and held up good. I had roughly $100 or less in it and looks better than many I have seen at shows, but I dont worry about a scratch or two and if I do it is easy to fix. I have a Farmall C I want to do as soon as I get caught up a little and I will do it the same way. I just could not justify the $$ into an automotive job with clear coat, etc, but that is just my 2 cents as it will get scratched either way.

Had a 140 painted 1 1/2 yrs ago with the original IH red. The brother of the tractor store owner likes to paint them and he does a great job. Cost me $600. It was in pretty good shape to start. I'm thinking $500 - $1,000 will get you a good looking tractor. You have to hire a painter who has experience in tractor painting. I would suggest blasting and priming by the painter before painting. I've got one with clear coat and acrylic that cost more and I bet you couldn't tell which one.

I've seen home jobs that were cleaned and sprayed without much prep. They were working tractors, so the owner just wanted to be able to see it out in the field. I've also seen high dollar show tractor finishes. Very nice.

It's all about what you want in the end. Me? I'm going for the high class finish. I would say 70% of my restoration budget will go towards the prep and paint.

my grandpa had an estimate to paint his ford tractor with a loader. Dont know what ford it was, butits about the size of my 300U, maybe a hair smaller. He was quoted 1500 to 2000 from several places. Theres alot of prep work to be done, painting it is the easy part.

I can do a paint job that costs anywhere from $250 to well over $3000 depending on what a person wants in the end.

Really no way to give an estimate without knowing exactly what you want in the end and what there is to start with.

Examples... For $250 I would probably hit it with a wire brush, prime it and spray it with 2150 paint. Not much hand sanding if any at all.

For more $$ I would have the tractor sandblasted, prime it, hand sand the tin work, prime again, hand sand tin work again, then put on a couple coats of 2150... or better paint for more $$ still. The PPG acrylic urethane that I like is around $50 per pint, plus the cost of reducer and hardener.

As you can see there are many variables when it comes to painting and you want to be sure your painter knows your budget and what you expect when it's done...

You've also got to decide if you want to use Case-IH 2150 per original specs, which will be much less costly, or go with the high dollar automotive type of paint, which is considerably more expensive and in my opinion, totally un-necessary. Painting a tractor is not that difficult, you do not need any fancy equipment, you can do the whole thing by using a brush on the cast iron and steel parts, and rattle cans for the sheetmetal, and I guarantee the tractor will still look better than when it was new, plus, if you did mess something up, just a few more dollars for more paint and you can do it over again.
