Howdy, Boys: Which is best working throttle type; saw-tooth, square tooth, or M&W friction type? I have got to do SOMETHING about my throttle. I no longer care if it is original IH or not; I'm going nuts trying to operate my tractor. The neighbors are laughing. Dogs are hiking their legs on my wheels, and cats are spraying my tires! It has a square tooth, and I am NOT impressed!!!! and, yes, I have changed the spring. Thanks as always. mike

Although I prefer a friction throttle, you can fix the toothed ones. Take it apart and carefully rebend the arm. It gets bent from people pushing down on it. Also, the turned up rub piece on the other end bets worn down. Get it straightened out so the spring has a chance to hold it up and it will work fine. It is nice to be able to count notches.

The friction disk throttle levers are the best.

You can still get the notched version, that is the one I prefer. To me, the friction throttles are ugly. The IH throttles are unique compared to the other makes of that era. Maintain the thing and it is fine. You can also get precise speed control when cultivating small crops, we used to count the notches. I have an H with a friction throttle, going to toss it when I restore it.

No question - the M&W friction type is far and away the best! The "knock off" imported friction throttles are OK, but don't work (or look...) as nice as the M&W.

I've got a M&W Friction throttle on my '52 Super M and I would prefer that type of throttle any day over the older saw tooth. Have used both types and personally I like the feel of the big M&W throttle, But as listed below it's what you prefer and what style you like better.

I prefer a good working friction type.

Given a choice between sawtooth and square notched, if both were working properly I would take the sawtooth. It all comes down to a preference - I've had all three.

Some of the H and M throttles would not hold at full throttle position when tractors were new on the other hand most worked fine. Personaly I prefer the friction throttles I have 2 genuine M&Ws and they work near perfect do not know about the Chinese imports that they are selling new now.

Hi Mike. I got a M&W friction on our MD and a saw tooth on the H, and let me tell ya, I love the friction over saw tooth anyday. If ya got good tension and new spring you can't beat it.

Mike, I don't know. The 48 I had had a notch tooth on it that drove me and the guy that works for me both crazy. It was worn out when I got the thing. I replaced it with a friction type and it worked great, but didn't look as good. The 50 M I have now has the same notch tooth on it that dad put on it in 1980. It works as good as it did when it was new, but him and me both are quite careful not to drag the handle on the teeth when moving it. None of mine have the sawtooth so I don't know how they hold up. Not to well I guess since you very seldom see a tractor around here with a good one on it. I do believe it boils down to how you treat them.
