I got the H bell-housing, transmission and rear-end into the shop this afternoon and started taking pieces off it for clean up, inspection and painting.

I got the covers off the brake drums. There is some oil in the left brake area. The oil seal behind the brake drum...is it difficult to change...can it be done from outside or must I take the top off?

I've got the same problem, leaky brakes but I've looked everywhere, no seals. Do you know where they are back there?

they arent too bad to change, you can do it from the outside. if the brake drum comes off easy, you are home free. slide her off, pop the seal out, put the new one in. the m i did had a stuck drum from rust, took a week of soaking with pb blaster and a brake drum puller to get it loose.

You do not have to take the top off remove and replace that seal. It will likely be difficult to remove the old seal, just punch, chisel and cut untill you can get it out. If you can, get the number off of the old seal before you bugger it up :-)
