300U not running good

My 300U has never run good for more then an hour at a time since I got it 4 years ago. This year I'm going to rebuild the distributor and then switch it over to electroic ignition. The only other thing I haven't done yet is rebuild the carb. What the tractor is doing now is running good for about 10-15 minutes and then starts surging and cutting out. If I pull the choke out it seems to smoothe out a little and stays running. Is this a symtom of low fuel supply? I recently installed an inline filter. What could be other causes?

Dear Randy, Pulling out the choke can make a engine run OK only when the problem is in the carb, or between the carb and the head of the engine. (vacuume leak). If the fuel was restricted on the way to the carb, or at the needle and seat, the pulling of the choke part way would only help for a brief moment, as more fuel was pulled out of the float bowl of the carb, with none to replace it. I believe either (as noted below) the manifold has a crack/leak, or there are plugged up passages in the carb. Use a propane torch (hand held small tank----- -not acytlene---) with the nozzle tip talken off, to supply a moderate amount of fuel all around the intake manifold. if you find a leak, the engine will perk right up. If this does not help, I would soak the carb, and rebuild it with a kit.
Also make sure the coil is not getting hot when operating. if it is, replace it. JimN

My H had the exact same symtoms once and turned out the manifold was loose. When it warmed up the gap got big enough to suck enough air to run rough and using the choke part way gave it enough gas to run better.

I had the same problem with my 300u rebuild the carb with attention to the position of the float very critical!! and GET RID of the in line fuel filters, stick with the bowl and screen you will see a diffrent tractor

About 95% of the time in line fuel filters cause you more problems then they fix. Thats what the sediment bowl and the screen that should be in it are for and are made for the type of fuel system thats on a tractor. First thing you need to do is pull the drian plug from the bottom of the carb, let it run for at least 5 minutes, cathc the gas to save you $$. It should have a good steady flow of gas. If it doesn't then take the line loose at the carb and check there. If you don't have a good flow there then remove the sediment bowl and check there. All 3 places you should have a good flow if you don't then you have a problem with the fuel line and not the carb. If you have good flow at all of them then its time to open up the carb

My 140 would start cutting out/sputtering (and pulling the choke would help). I would have to stop and set the points. Couldn't get the hold down screw to keep the point position tight for very long. A hex head bolt helped the problem some. Fixed the problem with electronic ignition and high voltage coil followed by setting the spark advance. Was able to open the spark plug gap from .025 to .042 in. Starts and runs great and that problem hasn't reoccured since (about 6 Mo).

My 350u goes through points and plugs like nobody's buisness. And, i put a resistor on for the point burning problem, which seemed to help lengthen the time they lasted. I wonder about quality quite a lot. ALSO, the coil mounted flat seems to be a problem with cheaper coils. If your coil gets warm or hot, get rid of it.

sounds like you got a fuel problem. dirt in the tank, carb plugged, maybe fuel line. also be sure your inline filter is a full flow for a gravity system. napa 3031 or 3032 are decent filters to run in line. get your fuel system fixed before to mess with the distributor.
