Hi All,
Having monitored this forum for some time I know this question has been asked and answered 100 times so please bear with me. I have a slight twist on the standard question after reviewing some of the documents on the Wisconsin Historical Society International/Farmall archives web site. What I"ve seen posted here before is that the proper colors for a 1926 10-20 would be Dupont #27625 (Gray) for everything except the wheels and Dupont #7410 (Red) for the wheels. Is the Dupont #27625 the light gray or the dark gray? I"ve seen some 10-20"s painted with dark gray and they don"t look right to me after reviewing some of the old marketing literature. The early 10-20"s look like light gray to me. Also, according to meeting notes of the IHC Paint Committee on December 21, 1926 (from the IHC archives at WHS) they decided to change the color of tractor wheels from "Persian Gulf Oxide" to "Harvestor Red". I"ve never seen this Persian Gulf Oxide posted as a legitimate color before. But if I"m reading the Paint Committee decision properly then a 1926 10-20 should have this Persian Gulf Oxide wheel color. Does anyone have a paint code for this? And am I interpreting the document properly?
Thank you for any help you can provide. And thanks to everyone who has helped me before as I"ve posted restoration questions on here many times. I"m finally getting close to ready for painting my 10-20 and want to make sure it"s done right.
Greg

I recenty acquired my grandfather's 1928 10-20. It was the first tractor he bought in the switch from horses. My uncle who inherited the farm had this tractor in a barn for 35+ years. Tried to get it from him for over 2 years had to finally buy it at the auction. Tractor was converted to rubber in about '36 he says. Anyway the tractor is painted Farmall red. My other uncle who passed away decided to do that back in the fifties because people were painting gray tractors red because they looked better. Also I guess the last 10-20's made were Farmall red. I'm in the process of trying to get it running. Just waitng for the mag to come back. Everything else looks good. I'm torn between leaving it as is because that's what the farm did, or going back to original colors.

Apparently IHC thought the tractors looked better in red as well since they switched to all red in 1936. I want to go with the original factory colors and am mystified by the paint committee decision in December 1926 that refers to changing from Persian Gulf Oxide to Harvester Red on the wheels. I don't think I've ever seen a restored 10-20/15-30 with orange wheels. I guess it will be an orange similar to the old Allis Chalmers tractors of which I have a 1950 WD.

Do we all agree that the drawbar was gray?

According to the Paint Committee records I've found the drawbar was gray until June 5, 1930 after which they were to be painted red. Then on November 1, 1936 the entire tractor was to be painted red.

okay here's my $.02

My reading of things is that 27625 is FARMALL gray, this is what I used on my F-12. I THINK that where the 10-20's are mccormicks and not farmall's that the gray that they are supposed to be is the lighter gray, more like what the mogal ect... are. Now Rod(NH) has copies of ppg and duponts paint code lists. I don't have the link for the dupont codes right handy, try a search through the paint forum on this website.

Thanks Jason. Your explanation of the two different gray's makes sense and seems to match the old advertising literature available at the Wisconsin Historical Society site. I think I'll go with the light gray and will have to do some more research on what the wheel color should be.

commitee decision number 8 pg 2 talks about persian gulf oxide being the same color as harvester oxide red. As I read No. 31 I think havester Red and oxide red as seperate colors. where oxide is being discontinued for indian red. And in no. 80 they are talking about the new harvester red. If I remeber correctly harvester red goes on to be called IH50 red which transfers to the modern paint 7410 in dupont and ppg's 70019 BUY A SMALL QUANTIY TO CHECK FIRST.

now in my dupont info they talk about 98626 being the grey for a 1917 titan and a closes match possible as cincinnati grey N9650A

IHC titan wheels red 012d and 253D are listed

a gulf orange is listed as N8523A

I DO NOT KNOW ANY OF THESE COLORS, I DO KNOW THERE ARE ERRORS IN THIS INFO FROM DUPONT. pleas please be very careful using any of this information I do not want to cost you money on bad info. please download the dupont info and take a look at it yourself.

You are not going to do it "right" anyway because in 1926 IH used such poor paint that if tractors were warehoused in the open for a few months they had to be repainted before delivery. Just paint it how you "like" it. At least that way NOBODY can dispute you.
I will agree with you though. I too believe that the early tractors may have been a lighter gray than later ones.

We has a 1926 10-20 and it was light gray. I don't remember the rims since it was changed to rubber tires. Sure was a nice tractor. I even had it pulling a 5-foot sickle bar mower to mow hay. We phase out the horses after that. My brother broke the tongue on the mower. I sawed it off and made a couple of brackets. I should've hooked up the other mower and made a 10-foot swath. That would been making history back in the late 1940's.

Here's where you may find your colors for your tractor. I will give you the tractor paint chart
for PPG's paint too. Hal

PS: I used PPG's Omni paint on a Troy Bilt tiller. It was the IH paint code 71310.
