I have a 49 cub with belly mower on it and the belt keeps coming off at pto pullie.it will trun good for few min. then jumps off so i have to loosen the rocksaft to get belt out. one of the pullys went bad and i changed it and it worked find but now it wont stay on long and its not doing the belt any good its marking it up pretty good. The slack in the pto pullie is only about 1/16 of a inch if that much. The bar are what ya call the mule bar i think the pullies on it have very lil slack. I dont know what else to do.
Any help would be great and keep me from loosing the rest of my hair lol (GRIVV)

GRIVV:

This is a real long shot, but it may be worth a look.

I had a mower that did the same thing. It turns out a little piece of a stick had gotten caught in the V of a pulley. As the mower ran, the belt really jammed the wood into the groove and polished it smooth. It wasn’t much bigger than a pencil eraser, but each time the belt hit that bump on the pulley it would shake the belt. The belt would either hit a guard and fray its own outer backing, or just jump off the pulley. It took a little effort to clean the pulley because that piece of wood was really wedged in.

How did you lose the belt the first time? If the mower hit something causing the belt to jump off chances are that that"s your problem. Belts have materials in them to limit their strech - many use kevlar or metal. When you hit sometning and the belt snaps tight it will break those bands. The belt looks as good as new but now when you try it, it runs for say 20 minutes and jumps off - you retighten - it runs 10 minutes and jumps off, etc. Your belt is no longer elastic (i.e., able to retain its shape) it"s now plastic (easily deformed). The only cure is a new belt.

Had this conversation many times with my lovely bride - we now have an agreement, she keeps hitting stuff with the Cub and I keep buying and and putting on $35 belts. Works good, no more fights.

If that belly mower is a Woods, the belt needs to have a 3/4 twist on one side, and a 1/2 twist on the other side. Not sure which side is which because I think the pto turns in the opposite direction on a Cub. I have a Woods on a Farmall H. The belt WILL NOT stay on if it is not twisted properly.

1. Check the alignment of the pullies.
2. Try a new belt.

Is this new pully the correct replacement, or something generic you got off the shelf at Tractor Supply.
