One of my students brought an old M into the ag shop. Pistons 1 and 2 are stuck. Soaked them with penetrating oil, still stuck. Any suggestions/methods on how to get them out?

take off the oil pan , put a bottle jack on top of stack of wood blocks and lightly lift it some , take off the cylinder head, check the condition of the cylinder walls, hone any rust out, set a big bearing race or something to even out the force that you are about to unleash, first try a hard wood block and a sledge , then a steel axle or what ever (ours is 2"dia and 13 "long).....it's important to measure from the top of the block to the top of the piston so you can stop and regroup and decide if you need coffee, when it moves a little you will know, if you want to go the other way , change the jack to another location on the crankshaft (don't jack up the tractor on the connecting rod) this method works, and it ain't for sissys, the H had a broken piston skirt on #2,at the oil ring land, I 've never seen one this stuck

A 12 pack, plastic block, and a sludge hammer loosened up an F-20. lol I'm a 16 year old student so I know your reactions to the 12 pack, but whatever works, right? lol. All in good fun. Hey, we used several substances from ether to diesel to a product that slipped my mind, and then tapped her for a few hours. No prob after that. Careful, when she decides to come loose it will probably throw the guy with the hammer off balance. It sure did for us. It then hand cranked over like it was never stuck. Still have lots of work to do on it yet.

Have two Farmall Bs that were stuck. Used PB Blaster, S'Ok, you name it, we tried it. And they were not successful.
Finally, after pouring Marvel Mystery oil into the first one's cylinders, I ended up pounding them out with a hickory hammer handle and a BRASS hammer. We used the brass hammer on two pistons. No. 4 on one and No. 2 on the other. They were frozen tight, but a few blows with a little sledge and boom, out. Fixing to try that theory out on an H and then on the grand prize, a 1939 M.

I HAVE FOUND THAT REGULAR OLD HOUSEHOLD AMMONIA WORKS RATHER WELL.I HAVE A 460 FARMALL THAT WAS STUCK.THAT WEEKEND FRI. AFTERNOON,I FILLED EACH CYLINDER WITH AMMONIA.WELL THAT SUN. AFTERNOON I WENT BACK ROCKED IT BACK AND FOURTH IN GEAR AND IT BECAME UNSTUCK.I GUESS IT DEPENDS ON HOW BAD THE ENGINE IS STUCK.ONLY THE NUMBER ONE CYLINDER WAS STUCK ON MINE. GOOD LUCK

Good penetrating oil like PB Blaster or ZED or Croil applied liberaly is a good start.WD 40 will do nothing. Jack up one rear wheel and rock it back and forth with tranny in gear.Rock it and let it set and apply more oil.May take a while but this is a safe and proven way to break it loose. It's most times the rings that froze to the sleeve,do it this way and you can use the pistons again if things are't too worn. Don't tow it,rods can and have been bent this way not to mention it's hard on everything else in the drivetrain.

Try pouring some coca cola into the pistons and letting it soak. You'll be surprised what that stuff will eat away.

i did the same as will, worked great , next day the new sleeves and pistins came in the mail and went in. worst thing you can do is break an old piston, [junk anyway].

54...,this past winter I overhualed a 10-20,all 4 pistons were stuck 2 of them real bad,#1 cylinder had top eaten right off along with the valves in #1.I used rust check for a week then got out the old block of wood and 5lbs hammer.Had them all free in an afternoon.Bought an other engine that was stuck, went straight to th block of wood and sledge hammer, inside of 3 hrs had them all free.Never damaged 1 piston,If it's posible try to unbolt them from the crank so they have more freedom to move. The second motor I layed it on its side it's easier to swing at.I used a block of wood that was sligthly smaller then the cylinder,Ithink it's the vibration that does the job.The first motor had not turned over in more then 30 yrs so it was pretty tight.[Just one way] Will!!

I have a Model A that took about a year of patient soaking with everything from Penetrating oil to tranny fluid.

I know in most cases the valves might be stuck too.But if the head is still on and you can take rocker shaft off,and by a small miracle the valves will shut. You can dump your liquid down the cylinders, put an air fitting in sparkplug hole and hook air hose to it,this will help to force the liquid down the cylinder and speed up the process.
