1941 M,rebuilt the pump, good clean radiator, tight belt, coolant flowing good,no crud in the waterjacket, new thermostat right now,but does the same thing without one in it.Runs hot if ya get it under a load, but takes awhile.this is how it started. Was bushhogging last winter, about 35 degrees outside.I had only done about 3 acres and noticed the temp creeping up,had been at 160 once it warmed up good.(I think it was the factory thermostat, but could have been replaced at some point,I guess).Never did get over 180-190 after 8 hrs of steady running,so I didnt worry too much about it,my other M runs 180.Pulled it out about 6 later, weather had gotten warmer of course, guessing about 75 or so that morning, ran hot within an hour of running, but never really boiled over much,as soon as she got up hot, around 230-240 I knocked the pto out of gear and idled it down and worked my way to the house, only about 3 minute ride in 4th.By the time I got back,it had cooled down to 170-180.First thought was hung thermostat or clogged rad.Put in new thermostat and blew out rad good, checked belt tightness at that time too and it was fine.Had used my other M for the work so I didnt really use this one, just put it back togehter and put it in the barn. This past winter, she did fine only getting into the 180 range so I thought that solved my problems.Today,I pull it out and hook up my bushhog and go about an hour and shes hot as before,230-240.Got it home and was really ticked at the old gal so headed to dealer for parts.Got everything, new thermostat, gaskets, parts for pump, whole nine yards!Waterjacket was clean as a whistle,3 yr old rebulid on the engine.Water flows when the thermostat is open and I see no signs of bubbles in the coolant before or during flow.I also changed the cap while i was there. It runs about an hour while the temp slowly creeps up,then it gets to the 230 range again, but if I can run the thing at maybe half throttle all day and it only gets to 180.Im out of ideas!Any body got any clues. I tell ya,if Icould get this field knocked down as fast with my Cub,Id just about be tempted to sell it!Oh,mechanic pressure tested the system, said it was fine,no leaks anywhere.
