Another quick question...when I start on gas, the engine idles at about 3/4 throttle. Is there a way to adjust the carburetor so that it idles at a lower RPM? I don't have an owner's manual....should I get one to make this adjustment? I've had the carb apart for cleaning and it seems quite simple. Thanks!

Thanks guys! I guess if the higher idle is normal, I'll just leave it alone. When I had the carb apart, I noticed the brass disk on the stud and thought that it is used to control air-flow through the venturi. On mine, it looks like it would be difficult to make any adjustments. It just seems that the idle should be set a bit lower. This is a great web-site!

The MD has no throttle control on the gas side, except the plate inside the carb that is pemanently set. You must remove and take the carb apart to change the setting. If yours is running at about 3/4 speed on the gas side, that is about right and I would not mess with it. Taking the carb off is not so easy since one of the bolts that holds it to the manifold is just about impossible to get a wrench on but I guess you know that if you have had the carb off.

The idle speed is set by adjusting the clearance between the throttle plate that sets above the body output hole and the body. I believe the book spec is like 9/64" but I'm not positive. Some of the carbs had a spring below the plate that held it up and you could adjust the idle speed by turning the mounting screw. On mine, it is mounted on a stud, so you would have to shim up or turn down the stud to adjust the clearance.

Troy, there is no throtle control for the gas cycle. The choke is the only way you control how much air you let in which controls the RPM on the gas cycle. IH did put a throtle control on the 600 and 650 diesel but that is the only ones that I am aware of. The 400/450 didn't have the throtle control.

You can adjust the float and you can use the choke to slow it down.

They idle pretty fast to warm them up.

I don't really know if there is an adjustment, though.

An owner's manual is always in order.
