I've just started restoring a 1941 Farmall B...I think...it's serial number is FAB 43891...it's been in my family since it was new. The confusing thing is, the back end seems narrow like a BN...I haven't measured it, but there is no space between the seat and the left fender...any clues?

BNs in that serial number range did not have the BN prefix. Your serial number should have a X7 stamped after the number or somewhere on the plate. BNs didn't receive the FABN prefix until serial 48350.

The serial number does indeed have the X7...you're saying that means it's a BN? Wonder why the sheet metal has the B decal? I have pictures of my Dad & Uncle on the tractor as boys...it clearly had the B at that point.

When I Restore it, should I put BN decals on?

If it has the X7, it is certainly a BN. I don't know when they started using BN decals- it could have had an early reprint with straight B decals.

Thanks again Guy...a BN it is. I spent some time in your "Letters Series" book tonight looking at the B/BN section. Enjoyed it. We need a spot with good side by side shots of a B and BN:-)

Guy's the man! If he don't know no-one does! Sorry about the miss-info. I should have checked my letter series originality guide ( Written by GUY)!! It's a great resource!

Actually, when I went through the letter series book, I was less than happy with the job I did on the BN. This information is from the Data Book I did.

My mistake...meant to say no space between the seat and the "right" fender...not the left fender. Also the decals clearly say "B"...not "BN".

Jim, If the ser# says FAB on the seat bracket and engine it is a B that's been modified. The axles would have been changed along with the tube they run in. The way to tell is if there are 4 holes on the top of the axle tube toward the fender where the B seat bracket would mount instead of on the flange at the fender.
