Grade of Gas needed

I have read several old posts dealing with gas quailty not being as good now with the addition of ethenal as in the old days. I have a I-544 4 cyl gas engine with what I believe to be the orginal compression (11:1). It has 4000+ hrs so the compression is most likely a little less.

My question is what grade of gas are you all useing? My manual states to run 91 octane. I try to mix 93 and 89 togather to get 90. I felt 87 would not work due to per detentation issues. Am I wasteing extra money on the high quality gas I do not need?

If ya want the darn thing to last and NOT EAT VALVES and super heat the pistons then run the high test or 93 , i have been there and done that. I have spent a lot of money on fuel testing and the 89 and 87 burn to hot for a tractor engine that is working hard and you will never see the extra heat build up on the temp. gauge till it is to late.

You may be right but if old tractors need 93 octane premium how did they ever run so well on kerosene and distillate? Have logged lots of hours over last 50 years on regular gasoline and have never had a problem with premature engine failure.

Have you noticed "pinging" or detonation with 87 octane?

As far as ethanol is concerned, while they may be some issues of the ethanol dislodging crud in the fuel system and plugging things up, usually gas with ethanol is HIGHER octane than standard unleaded.
