Farmall H, is this a good price?

I am new to the tractor scene and am still trying to get the hang of what is a good price and what is not. I live in Illinois and have the chance to buy a Farmall H for $1250. It is just the tractor but it is in excellent running shape (Clutch, transmission, brakes, hydrualics & pto are in fine shape) and the engine starts and runs good. The tractor also has been recently painted so it looks sharp. The tires are in good shape with only minimal checking. Is $1250 a good price for this? It appears to me that it is but don't really have the experience to know. Also, how hard is it to find a loader for the H? Any other newbie advice you can give me is appreciated!

Also, what size trailer would you recommend to haul this tractor home? The drive is 7 hours one way and I have a new Chevy 2500hd to pull with but don't know what size trailer will bring this home safely. Thanks!

I would use a tandem trailer with 3500# axles with brakes on at least one axle. I brought a W-4 from Wichita KS to South Alabama last summer behind my wifes Toyota 4-runner with no problems on such a trailer..... .should be able to buy a new one for around $1200 or you can rent one from Ryder for around $50. per day

That is a decent price with the description you gave. Unless you decide to convert to 12 volt, it sounds like it is field ready and you won't have to shell out money for problems.

I just spoke with the owner and he is going to give me a loader off of an old Farmall M tractor. He said that they are the same loader for the H series. Is this correct? He said the it needs repacked but otherwise is in good shape. Will this loader work on a H without mods?

No, he simply stated it was on his M Farmall when he bought it. I have no other info on it other then the fact that it needs to be repacked.

Does anyone have any good advice on where to get a 3 point that will fit? I did go ahead and purchase the tractor (especially after having him throw in the loader) but need a 3 pt so I can run the bush hog that I have.

I bought an (h) last month , it has been repainted and looks good, but smokes pretty bad, which probably means rings or valve's and guides, After buying it I also found out that it pops out of 4th gear, you cant keep it 4th if you wanted too. It does have new tires on it. I paid 1,000.00 for mine. One thing I would check on the one that you are looking at is to make sure that it doesent pop out of 4th or 5th gear. From what I have read on this site it is a very common problem on h's and m's. But even if it does pop out of either of those gears it still sounds like a pretty good deal. From what I have read the poping out of gear issue is either a worn shifter, or bad gear in the transmission.Overall what you described sounds like a good deal "to me" but it all depends who you ask, beacause everyone as an opinion. Good luck Jon Mirgon

If the H is in as good a shape as you say it is, then the price is very well within reason. Go for it.

One other question, this has the 6 volt system on it. I have heard that the 6 volt systems are very hard to start. How hard is it to switch it to 12 volts? Thanks!

As far as the 6 volt system goes , A mechanical sound Farmall engine starts fine on 6 volts. I have a farmall a also that I am restoring and is almost completed, I rebuilt the engine and replaced the carberator with a new one, also replaced the wiring harness, battery and battery cables. It turns about two revolutions before it starts on a 20 degree day. If it is in good mechanical condition 6 volts will get you going every time.I got curious one day last week when it was cold out , and went out to see how easy it would crank start on a cold day. I cranked by hand twice and it was running on the seconed crank by hand. I'll bet a john deer can't do that !

A 6 volt system in proper working condition will be just as reliable as a twelve volt and actually 6 volt magneto ignition is hotter than 12 volt coil ignition when every thing is set right. Also you can install an 8 volt battery in a 6 volt system for harder cranking engines. The drawbacks to a 6 volt system are dimmer headlights and more things to keep maintained like magnetos, generator cutouts. I personally believe that anything designed as a 6 volt should stay that way.

I can't really comment on the price, but for about everything you need to know about H's check out the link below to Farmall-h.com, there is a section there about buying an H plus a lot of other info. Good luck.

Mike,

The fire business is about the same. I haven't had much time for computers or tractors since my little boy learned to walk, then run, then climb, you know the drill! I haven't touched the H for a year, but I do have a Case VAC to fix up for the little one, it was his great grandfathers on my wifes side.

Take care!

well it dosen't sound bad to me -- I baught a 1954 super H -- it came with a brush hog, it too is in excellent running order, and I figure the rough cut mower is worth 700 used. I paid 1800.00 -- but the paint is not in great shape, and the nose piece (sheet metal) has a few dents in.

I would go for it -- just make sure it dosen't smoke much during start-up (if sitting a little is to be expected) The only real problem I had with mine was the float was stuck a bit, but nothing a tap from the handle of a screwdriver didn't fix -- then it started right up.

I wish you well with it -- I too am a new collector - tractor people are some of the nicest people i have ever met --

may i suggest subscribing to a magazine called red power -- excellent source for information, and prices. also lancaster farmer -- another good place to look for comparing prices.

Hi Griz,

Depends where you are and where you are standing; it all depends on what you are willing to give for it and what you think it is worth.

To me that price is cheap; to the next guy, it will be way too high.

Loaders are a dime a dozen.

Later,

Allan
