Can the injector pump be timed close enough using the timing marks on the pump gear? The engine noise seems to be excessive. I heard that a 19 to 1 compression ratio will be noisy, and the book says that could be from the timing. I set the timing at 21 and changed it to 19, but it didn't seem to change the noise. Anyone know something about it? I have the CAV inline injector pump.

Ok, hope this helps. My I&T service manual says that the optimum timing is 20 degrees BTDC. Although 20 is optimum, timing can be retarded as far as 16 degrees BTDC in cases where engine noise is critical and power requirements are not exacting. However, timing should not be advanced more than 22 degrees BTDC or max power will be reduced and glowplug failure will be increased. Hmmm.

You can check the pump timing as follows:
1. Shut off the fuel and remove the injection pump timing window and clutch housing dust cover.
2. Turn engine in direction of normal rotation until the No. 1 piston is coming up on the compression stroke. Continue turning until the "TDC" mark on the flywheel aligns with the scribe mark located on the left front flange of the clutch housing. 3. Check the timing marks on the engine front end plate and pump mounting flange. 4. If alignment is required, loosen nuts on pump mounting studs, align the mark on pump mounting flange midway between the two marks on the engine front end plate and retighten the nuts. At this time, the "E" scribed line on injector pump rotor should align the scribed lines at the lower hole of the pump snap ring. These marks are visible after removing a small cover panel at the main drive gear. 5. Note: Movement of the pump between the two scribed lines on the engine front end plate gives a variation of about 3 degrees.

Man! Got a finger cramp.

Hi, I believe the compression ratio is 22:1 on those UK Diesels. We had a B414D which is the bigger brother of the B275. It always had a lot of noise and clatter when it was idling to slow.
When it was new IH mechanic tried slowing the CAV injector pump timimg but the only outcome was less power and more smoke. Returned it to factory setting and never let engine idle below 800 RPM.

Hope this helps
