Well,it seems I have inherited a project,a 1953 SMD that my buddy bought for 200 bucks. We pulled the head and loads of gunk and water, and he got a little scared of it so I offered to take it off of his hands for the 200 he had in it.A little history on Mr B,bought new in 1954 by Mr Duard Bagwell, hence Mr B.Mr Bagwell died in 1979,and mr B has sat every since. His only nephew, which he treated like the son he never had, decided hed pull it out and try to get it running, but time had locked it up,so he put back in the barn. The barn had since fallen in and broke off the exaust pipe and thats where the water came from.Another fellow had bought it about 6 months ago,not realizing the amount of water in it,had filled the cylinders with brake fluid in a neffort to break it free with no succes,so he sold it to my buddy. After a couple of post and some good advice I got here we began tearing into it,then the scariest thing happened,as we pulled the head, water came from the cylinders and combustion chambers and my buddy got cold feet.Well, as I said, Igave him his 200 for it and I tok the head this morning for pressure testing, and with any luck, itll still be good.I know itll need new valves, all 12 of them probably, but i have a good machinist and he may can save it all.The rust on the valves isnt bad at all except on the surface tha tface the pistons, but the sleeves will need replacing as well as the rings and if Im lucky I may can save the pistons, these are M&W pistons, butIm not holding my breath on those.I think the rods may be ok if I can get those out,and the strangest thing is the lower half of the neigne is in emaculate condition. It looks as though maybe it was rebuilt shortly before it was parked. All the bearings seem tight, but that could just be from it being locked up.Oh well, such is life.Im sure I will have a ton of questions once I get more deeply into the teardown,so be patient with me,this may take a few years!!!!

Like Ole Woody Hayes, there are just some words you don't say, but in this case I'll drop my guard and say that I'm "Green" with envy. Just by looking at the pics, I can see a magnicient beauty in the making. I know you have a lot of work ahead, but what a grand piece of work is there at completion. Good Luck, and by all means keep us posted.

Cubber, What a find! As Rustyfarmall said it is good to see others who arn't afraid to tackle the impossible.
Take your time, go slow the end product will be worth it. Remember, It took Noah about 100 yrs to build the Ark!
Good Luck,
John A.

Looks like you have you work cut out for you for quite some time. All of my projects look very similar, glad to know I am not the only one who insists on doing the impossible.

It looks like a good restoration canidate to me ! I wish a could come accross a SMD for the grand price of 200.00. I have an (a) and an (h) and an (md) or (smd) is what I would like to start on next, It is a bit scary on the parts prices to rebuild one of those diesels, But the end result will be well worth it. $$$$$ Good luck with your project !
