I love this site and have been accused of "living" at ytmag. But I am becoming more and more reluctant to leave my email and have been thinking that there should be a better way to contact eachother. I want to keep the forum public so anyone that comes on can post replys, (I think that is what makes this place great) But what if we had a link that we could post in our messages to would lead to a "members only" place where we could interact with eachother? Just throwing it out for thought and discussion. let's not get in a fight here

I agree with putting up your email address, but I use a spam blocker that requires the person sending me email to verify they are really a person. Email me and you will see how it works. I have young kids at home and do not want the trash you can get from spam or advertisements.

I use SpamEater to cut the spam. I don't leave my e-mail address available here for another reason. When I started using the forum, I would insert the e-mail address, but I started getting a large amount of virus-laden e-mail. When I stopped leaving an e-mail address, the virus mail stopped immediately. Coincidence? Maybe. It's just that I'm reluctant to leave my address open now. If someone wants my e-mail address so we may exchange information, I'll do it. But I'll leave the address right in my post - with a few slightly modified characters so as to not have those machines automatically plucking my address.

Cowman, I have read and re-read both your post and the replies to be as objective as possible. While I believe your suggestion was made with the best intentions in mind, and I agree that sometimes we leave ourselves vulnerable to less scrupulous people, on balance, I think that the format for this forum is as we all would wish all forums to be. I think if we were to set up a link where membership vis-a-vis Aditional screen name, and password were required for entrance, then we end up with an elite group and deny each the input that attracts us here in the first place. We would be speaking to the choir in a sense because the wealth of information and experiences would be left at the door. I have to say that I have learned volumns here since I have been comming to this forum, buth from the "Pros", but also from the experiences of novices who may make a mistake that is shared so that I wont have to make it myself. I have gone to the Puller's forum on occasion, and have seen what happens, even in an open forum, when competing ideas as opposed to shared ideas on the rest of the forums. I realize that spammers and scamers can be a pain, but I think most of us have shared enough experiences with both that we should know by now how to discern what is legitimate and what isn't. Therefore, it is my opinion that YTMAG has done everything it can to create a positive atmosphere for all of us, and it is up to us to keep it that way and not to create a cumbersome format that will benefit a few but exclude others. We need everyone, and everyone's input openly. Thanks for your suggestion, Cowman, as it made me think before I responded.

Speaking completly selfishly. I'd sure miss the knowledge of you guys. ALL of what I've learned about Farmalls (tractors), I've learned from you folks. This is most knowledgable and friendliest group of people that I have had the pleasure of dealing with. If you were to go to a place that only allowed pros I'm afraid it would exclude me.
My $.02. Thanks Again!!!

Cowman: From me a hands down no to your idea. Once you start that you create a elite club. One thing I always do on forum at YT is make my e mail available. By doing that I already enjoy many personal e mails from people that regularly frequent this forum. Be aware though I never open anything if it doesn't have a subject. I probably get more e mails about tractor and equipment from people we never see on this forum than I do from participants. In fact if there is a day I'm scarce on forums it is bacause I'm dealing with personal e mails.

Kim has done an excellent job of making this site a better place. I have been around YT discussions now close to 5 years. There used to be some very annoying individuals, participating. Disclosure for the most part has gotten rid of them. We already enjoy one of the best groups I know of, so we are quite special. Just witness what happens when one of our group encounters some difficult or unpleasant happening in their life. Just watch what happens on Christmas Eve and Day.

Unfortunately that wont work. The good part of a open fourm is that we all know it and act accordingly. I dont put out stuff I cant live with others having. ( notice I did not say like others having)

A closed fourm would take a hacker about 10 seconds to beak into. There would be all these unsuspecting people there sharing info they think is safe. Equals a pay load for the spoofer.

Nope keep mine open so I can see em coming.

NC,

You bring up an issue which has become a major pain in the south quarter for everyone tied to the 'net.

I've been doing this online thing since the days of DOS and have watched it get steadily worse by the year.

Unfortunately, the gleaners are going to be out there and there just is no way around it. They are like tics on a dog and it is left up to each one of us to fight this problem in our own way.

It is not fair, but that is the way it is. Let me offer you this for what it is worth:

A number of years ago, the wife and I set up an online corporation, which deals in the world of medicine. We are always connected to & do business with every corner of the globe 24/7. We constantly have 26 machines online at all times via 4 satellite uplinks & 5 ISP’s. These machines must 'never' go down and are constantly connected to very sensitive, time critical and highly confidential materials.

Security is a huge issue with us; as we simply cannot "leak" nor can we be "down" because of these problematic Internet detriments.

So far to date, I've found the best defense against spam and pop-ups are located at www.panicware.com These two little apps will cost $60 for both, but I've found nothing better, ever; they really work!

Secondly, anti-virus software: Hands down the absolute best is located at:>Link

Thirdly, if you are tied to the ‘net with an “always on” connection, a hardware firewall is an unconditional must.

Just for what it is worth,

Allan

While I receive my fair share of unwanted spam, I prefer this forum. Several years ago Red Power's forum tried to deal with some of these issues and ended up with a difficult forum. I prefer YT and hope it will continue as is. Geoff

Have you checked out Red Power Forum lately? It's a bigger mess than ever now. Lots of griping and carping about staying "on topic". Not nearly as useful as it used to be.
The only way I have found to reduce the spam is to use a Hotmail or yahoo e-mail on these forums. I still get the trash, but it doesn't jam up my work or home e-mail.
BTW, my record is 372 spam e-mails received in one day. Glad it was on Hotmail.
Although this format sometimes lends itself to trolls and spammers, I still like it better than the other forums I have seen.

The last time I tried to get on the red power forum, I couldn't, the site did not recognize my password, and when I entered my name in order to find if i was using the correct password, it told me that some one else was already registered with my name, and would not give me my password. I finally gave up, and deleted the red power forum off my list.
