Did you turn the engine over with the rotor gear reduction removed? If you did there is a very good chance the magneto is now 180 degrees out of time.A good indicator is if it backfires through the air cleaner while you are cranking it.

For an engine to run; 1. it has to have a fresh supply of fuel in the right proportions 2. a strong spark at the right time 3. decent compression.
Which of these 3 things is missing??
If you have been cranking for a time remove the spark plugs and squirt some engine oil in each cylinder to help restore compression.
Are the spark plugs wet with gas??
Some basic troubleshootion and the "M" shuld be running in short order!
Good luck.

Your points may have heavily oxidized and only making contact on one tiny spot. When you regapped the points you may have slightly changed the contact point to a bad area. Using gloves hold or preferably tie the coil wire about a half inch away from the block and crank engine, if you are getting a healthy blue spark, can't be a point problem. I have also seen capacitors fail and cause a no or erratic spark condition. For the price of them, when i feel points are the reason my tractor isn't running right i throw in a new set with capacitor. You should also pull the bottom off your carb and check the passages just for peace of mind.
