The diff. lock comes on when I put my foot on the pedal, however it does not release ver well. sometimes it takes quite long. I am concerned about putting chains on and breaking an axle.

Jim,we have a 2030 J.D. loader tractor,whenever
I use diff. lock,it takes a long time to release.
I have found that applying either brake(right or
left) for a second causes it to release.I am not
familiar with you're tractor though, and before
someone mentions it,we have a 1066 & H on the
farm also.

I have an IH 444 that the diff lock acts similiar to yours. I have found that Matt's suggestion works pretty well on my 444 as well as on his deere.

Hi, had a B414 and 434D many years ago that did the same thing with the diff lock. Sometimes would have to reach down and pull foot pedal up by hand and then touch left or right brake to make it release.
We later had a 384D and IH had put a return spring on the Diff lock pedal. Now the pedal would return but still had to touch brake to release. If all else fails push in the clutch.
I would not worry about braking an axle as I only know of one broken axle on a 434D and that was the operators fault. There were several B414, 434, 444, 384s around our area.

Always be careful with diff lock engaged as tractor goes in a straight line only. Also if both rear wheels are spinning the rear end can shoot left or right very quickly.
