On eBay, a fellow has three jars for sale:

What I found interesting was he has them listed as 7, 8, and 9.

I figured it was because he had at least 9 different auctions going.

But, I emailed him anyway, asking if that was the explanation.

I received this reply: "Hello,
Thank you for your question. There is a number 8 embossed on the bottom of that jar and a number 9 embossed on the bottom of the other jar. Thank you for your interest."

Did any or all of you know this?

Ball jars are numbered on the bottom as you say. I cannot vouch for how high the numbers go but I have seen one set marked 1 thru 20 in an original box with asking price around 150 I take it collectors are after particular numbers. As for the correct one for the pre-cleaner I have no idea but the one in the picture in this thread is very convencing.

I don't understand where they come up with the high prices on those precleaner jars. I have seen them advertised at $30. They are simply a 1/2 pint large mouth mason pint. That's not rare and a case runs about $7. I have seen them sell at farm auctions for a dollar a basket. I guess I better start buying and selling them.

To make the jar even more special you need to drop a toy john deere in it

Well, Jed, there are folks who say that there was only one "origional" jar, although any widemouth pint jar will fit.

Many claim that the origional (and to them the only "acceptable" jar) is the Ball Special. It says Ball Special right on the jar and says "Widemouth" right on the jar also.

Well, I have an eye for detail and I have yet to see a specialty jar. Do they sell well on Ebay? People will buy about anything if you tell them it is a one of kind though. Just go to an auction and watch them pay double and even triple for stuff. To them it is a game and if you bid the most you "Win". My question is what company would have set up a seperate product run to make these special jars? It would have been a losing proposition from the get go. How come the original Farmall parts guides don't mention the special jar?
Joe's Farmall in Pa. says they were just mason jars.
Perhaps I am wrong? Whatever was available in the way of parts was what was used as I understand it. Are points deducted if you don't have the correct jar?

I have also tried to order these special jars from grocery stores, special wide mouth, both stores were about $7.00 a case. They fit but are not like the original. They are Ball and must be a number not popular with the grocery stores.

Hi Jed, again, well you may very well be right, they might have grabbed whatever jar was the next in line, I would not know.

But, what I am saying is that I have seen (heard) folks say that the Ball Special was the correct jar, that's it. They may very well have been incorrect.

As a side note, I have an H tractor that has a Donaldson pre cleaner and it has one of these Ball Special jars on it. It was a neighbor`s tractor, he bought it new in '46, my dad bought it from him in '72, there is a possibility that the jar is original.

I have a picture of it here on my computer, if I knew how, I would post it for you.
