Hello all. I just recently got my 5 H running that has been sitting for about 15 years. Sure was good to hear it breath again. When it was parked the owner said that he thought it had some gear problems. When I drive it it is hard to get into most gears and usually when I hit bump it grinds some and sometimes comes out of gear. I think I need to replace a bearing in the rearend, but these problems seem to me to be clutch/throw out bearing problems. Has anyone had this problem before and if so what fixed it? Thanks in advance. RayA in OK

Ray, is it 5th gear it pops out of or all gears? H's are notorious for jumping out of 5th, when the shifter gets worn a bit. My experience with H's is that owners often did not follow the maintenance plan very well. The fingers on the clutch need to be adjusted so they are even with each other and there is about 2-5/32th inch clearance. If you don't have a belly pump it is easy to get at them through the belly pan and they adjust easily. Loosen the jam and turn the bolt until the finger is in the desired position, getting them the same is important. That should give you the release to shift the lever and get the tractor all the way in gear. There could be other problems with the clutch but start there. If you have a belly pump it is more work to remove it but you need to look up in there and see if there is room to adjust those fingers. Good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

Hello Mike. I just took off the inspection plate below the clutch houseing and low and behold the fingers arent even. When you said to adjust them 2-5/32th, Is that distance from the flywheel face or from the throw out bearing and also is that 2 inches and 5/32, or 2 to 5/32. I have never adjusted a clutch before so sorry if these questions are kind corny. Thanks in advance. Ray in OK

Thanks for the quick response. I havent had enough nerve to try out 5th gear yet as the stearing is really loose. I will have to drop the belly pump, but it will be worth it so I can see what is going on with the clutch. I figure this will be my new years day off project..haha. Thanks again for the great information. Headed to the auto parts store today to get some Bars leak for the radiator and straight hose for the air intake pipe. RAyA
