After searches here and on Google, I can't find any source for a spin on oil filter adapter for my '47 H. I saw the references to Carter and Gruenwald but couldn't find a description/price at their site. Does anyone know where I can buy one of these via the web? Is one make/model superior to another or are most of the adapters pretty much the same?

Thanks,

Dave

There may be adapters for this application in the WIX Filters Master Catalog. I am 25 miles away from my catalog tonight. If interested, email me, and I'll look in the catalog tomorrow. They do have a number of applications listed, but I'd have to look to be sure if the "H" is listed. If you had a WIX number, you could order a WIX kit, or your local auto supply store could convert it to their part number.

Several years ago, I got the ones for my M and SM through the local Carquest auto supply store.

They don't look right to the restoration purists, but they are GREAT! (Actually, if you spray the filters red, most folks don't even notice!)

You wouldn't have any part numbers or be able to tell me how you asked for this adapter. I'm imagining talking to someone at Carquest who was hired yesterday - if I don't hit that computer match, I may not find it.

Thanks,

Dave

It's been at least 15 years, so you may not have any luck with Carquest. I'll try to remember to look tomorrow evening for any part numbers that might be visible on the base, but I don't think any show. A web search for Carter & Gruenwald turns up a website as Link I'm guessing that the CASE-IH dealer in your area might have these. They are really neat, and as you put it in your other post, they DO tend to encourage maintenance!

I'm just not sure why you would want one.

Greater options in filters - media and sizes of filters. More sources of filters. Ease of changing the filter. It seems others have made this same query with the answer being Ken Updike at Carter and Gruenwald - I'm just trying to get an idea of what they would cost and whatever specs are available.

I guess that's fine Dave but I only stock one filter for all my old farmalls (I buy them in case lots from Case IH)and I can change it with the same cresant wrench I remove the drain plug with.

I'm just trying to find a source. I'm not pretending enough experience to say this is the way to do it. I'm trying to configure this machine to be as easy as possible to maintain by those who don't have more any interest than those who wish to keep their vehicle operational to get from A to B. I won't always be around to maintain it. If I increase the chances of the filter being changed by setting it up in a manner that one look and a trip to any auto parts store will get it done, that will be worth it. I'm not going to be tossing the original cannister so I won't be reducing its antique value. In the meantime, I'm using it as an occasional work machine and want maintenance for that work to be as easy and universal as possible.

Thanks,

Dave

DOesn't get much easier than changing the original filter.

As a task, I agree with you. As a recognizable object viewed by someone who doesn't know anything about antique tractors, the spin on filter is more easily replaced because it's more familiar. I know the people next likely to change it in my stead but I think it's true of anyone. If they see the spin-on, they are more likely to pick up a replacement the next time they get one for the car. That's why I'm choosing this path.

To each his own, but with the spin-on system, I only stock one filter, and sometimes don't even need a wrench or pliers. Filter base covers the old base, and it no longer needs draining.

I have a question. When you unscrew the spin on filter does all the old oil run all over the machine? With the old canister I just drain it and can clean up with a small rag.
