Duals for M

Was wondering how duals attach to the tractor. Saw a Super M parked in the Bavarian Inn lot in Frankenmuth, MI which had them. It had special rims for the duals and it looked like a series of clamps around the rim held them on. This tractor was yellow and had a grader hooked to it. Haven't seen it since to get a second look. I have also heard some guys just put on a second set of rims with them turned opposite to each other. How many ways are there to do this and are there any safety issues.....other than having one land on you?

Here is my H with duals, they are snap on, there is a metal ring welded on the outside rim an four clamps are added around the rim, Loops screw onto the clamp bolts instead of the clamp nuts an thus you snap the rims off an on at will. On theis picture I only have two clamps on the right rim your looking at instead of all four. The other two were added affer the picture.

Nice picture of the H. I think it's the first time I have seen an H with duals! I was wondering how you like that type of rim? That is the style seen on the M here locally. Where did you get the rims and about how much were they?
I can understand the advantage of having two sets of regular rims mounted in/out for strength, but on the other hand, I keep my single rims dished out for a wider wheelbase, stability, and (honestly) it looks better. The clamp ons would appear to prevent a need to change all 4 rims when adding duals. The additional strength is less of an issue for me as I don't ask that much from my older tractors...at least not yet.

Dave, About a year ago, I saw a beautiful "M" with duals sitting on a lot on Outerbelt Dr. in Saginaw. This one had the inside wheels dished in and the outside duals dished out. I dont know if it helped with traction, but it sure looked impressive to me.

Yeah...they pop up everywhere. Especially in that area where there is and has been so much ag.
That one in Frankenmuth sure was impressive. Bright yellow Super M with massive duals and a wide front. Must have been a municipal tractor as it was a no-show when Tiny (Zehnder) had his auction last spring. I wanted some of his hay tools but everything that guy touches is gold and the auction was no exception. Hey, are you a member of that tractor club in Chesaning? I'm not...but I hit their show in August. Pretty good time!

Dave, I'm not in any club at this point. We have an antique engine club in Midland and a friend of mine has asked me about joining, but beyond attending their shows, I haven't committed. There's another good club in the thumb area, and D. Rushlo invited me to join there, but that is sort of out of my way geographicly. I have 2 Farmalls now. A 52 "H" restored and a 40 "A" in progress. I attended the show in Oakley, and it is indeed a dandy show. There are lots of good shows in Mich. Its just deciding which to take in.

Brian's right...try to find a set of axle mount duals. There is alot of stress put on the 2 bolts that clamp your wheel center to the axle on the "M" when rim mount duals are used.. I have seen them break.

You can take the original rear wheel's, and put them on the axel dished in, and then put another set of original wheel's on dished out to have duals. Note that you have to have the inside wheel dished in and the outside wheel dished out to make it work. You also have to have the entire wheel with the caste iron center and axel clamp for the additional wheel and not just the rim/tire. When switching wheels from dished one way to the other, remember that if you put them on the other side of tractor instead of just turning them around, your tire tread will stay the same way instead of ending up being backward. Sounds like the set-up you saw with the clamp on rims might of been something that somebody came up with themselves. The M or super M isn't really a big enough tractor to justify having duals on it. It would definately require the right situation to have duals on one for a particular job. Have atleast 2 or 3 people around to help when handeling those wheels while switching them around. That is about the only safety I can think of other than safe jacking.

What do you mean the M or Super M isn't really big enough to have duals on them? This was standard practice back in the 60's and early 70's. With duals on the tractor you could pull a much larger disc than without, and didn't work the tractor any harder. You could get the dual set-up in either a rim-clamp configuration, or hub mount. There wasn't an M in the country that didn't have duals for spring field work.

I always considered a 50 horse power tractor boarder line for actually utulizing the floatational use of duals for pulling. In the right senerio as you are discribing (discing on loose dirt which would be on already disced or plowed ground) the duals would probably help. Having the wide front instead of the tricycle would probably help just as much. Not to many people trying to make a living working ground with an M as one of there main tractors today, compared to the 60's when the M was likely a number 2 tractor in the tractor line-up on a functional farm. Put the duals on if you want. If I have to mess with duals on an M, I am just going to walk over and get on the 1066.

Well, this is probably the wrong board to tell this, but back in the early '50's my dad had a cedar swamp cleared, and wanted to disk it up with his JD B and a disk tiller. Kept getting stuck until he borrowed another set of wheels off another B and dualed it up. Just slid the origional wheels in on the axles and slid the new ones on the outside. With the additional flotation he got along just fine. Neighbors were rolling in the aisles with laughter. Funny thing, no one is laughing at their grandsons with their dualed and tripled and 4wd tractors. How things change in half a century. Duals were a solution to a problem then, and now - just not near as funny now!

As far as duals go I grew up with a set on my SM. I cut my teeth on that SM steering wheel and a 12ft. disc. Sure Dad could have had someone else use the 856 and a 20ft. disc but how was I to learn? That old SM has been a good tractor to us. It also pulled our 6row planter with a harrow and we had two 125 gallon saddle tanks on her as well. Boy I miss hearing her roar. She set a spell when I went to school, about 15 years. Then my senior year in high school we did an in frame overhaul and put new tires on her. She still is one of our main tractors and does a alot of misc. work as well as pull our sprayer. I think she has around 7000-8000 hrs now but it is hard to read the hour meter that well. A good old tractor thats more than paid it's way!

Dave another option and probably the one I would use is to find a set of 9 bolt M&W hubs for a 560 and a good set of 9 hole wheels. They would be easier to put on and take off than the extra set of factory wheels, and are stronger than the band type (which sounds like the one you saw had on it). Brian
