my winter project this year is a 48 M with a wide frount end, lots of small things to fix and replace, the knob on the full level valve is gone. you can open it with plyers, but would like to fix it. do i need to remove the oil pan to get it out? thanks --mike

Mike, It is not uncommon for the handles of the oil check cocks to break off. They are easily replacable, and there are sources who sell the replacements. O.E.M. comes to mind, but I'm sure there are others. The old check cock is easily removable with a pipe wrench or a pair of vice grips. They are pipe threads. Nothing should have fallen out on the inside.

make sure you inspect the new check cock, as all of the reproductions I have seen open in the opposite direction as the originals.
