Carb ? Am I missing the obvious still yet?

Hello- I have an issue continueing similar to the "Too much fuel pressure" posting. I have been using the good advice you have been given me, but need more.
The set for the float, the tab is at 90 degrees and is set to stop the float from going down at a certain point by touching up against the seat tube wall.
Am I missing the fact that this tab may be the very tab to push the needle valve closed, or am I correct but just not out of the woods yet?
I have a brand new float ready to go in as I think my tinkering has bent the old one in a way that it is catching the side wall.
Please lemme know if the tab is correct, or if I need to bend it over to push on the needle. I have been letting the base of the float do this job.

Many carburetors have 2 float spec's, Float level and float drop.

Often, there is a little tab that presses on the needle to close it. You typically make this setting with the carburetor top upside down, and measure from a specific point on the float to the machined area that seals against the gasket between the carb halves.

The other adjustment is the "float drop". This setting controls how much the float will drop if the fuel bowl is empty, and helps prevent the float from sticking in the down position. This adjustment is made by holding the carburetor top in the normal operating postion, and measuring from the gasket sealing surface to a specific poiont on the float to see how much it drops when hanging free. The tab controlling this is normally 90 degrees from the on that operates the needle.

Post back with the application you are working with and someone can give you the float level and float drop specifications for your particular carburetor.

The float has only one tab. I can either point it upward and have it rest on the seat's outside wall when it is descending, or can I point it toward the wall to have the wall stop it?
The carb is for a 300utility.

Every float I've ever seen has the tab running the needle valve. Had the carb on my H all apart awhile ago and can't remember anything unusual about it, so I'm thinking this is the way it is. That float should bottom out in the bottom of the bowl when opening the needle and will stop floating upward when the needle bottoms out, shutting off the fuel flow entering the fuel bowl. Your float is working just the opposite way!

So, if I understand you correctly, I have it in upside down.
It is for a 300U carb. I wish I could draw a picture in this response.
