I think it is possible but i just want to make sure. I know the 1066 has the same engine as the 966 so i dont see why it shouldn't work.

Dan: I do know another guy that did all the items Duane has done and others have mentioned. He went one step further and turned hp up to 160 hp. After 2 years of this a new 1486 was purchased and the turbo kit for the 966 was removed. I do have to agree with the others, 120 hp will work fine, but you can achive that without the turbo. Remember, once you install that turbo, my guess is you will never enjoy the kind of fuel efficiency you now enjoy on light work. No one has all heavy work.

I had a 1066, it always dynoed 160 hp. I also had 6 other smaller tractors and 2 skid loaders for lighter work. Believe me, the only time that 1066 was ever started was when the job at hand required 120+hp.

Now if you are talking tractor pulling, 600, 800 or a 1,000 hp will go over just fine also, 45 seconds down a track is not work, just warm up.

You get them sucking back 6, 8 and 10 gallons of fuel per hour, for 10, 12, 16 or 24 hours non stop, it takes performance. I have seen my 1066 go 24 hours per day for 5 days at a time, burning 10 gallons of fuel per hour, excepting fuel up time. If you want to work them like that leave them as they came from factory.

The final drives, bull gears, axels are heavier
on the 1066 and 1466. If you need a 1066 trade for
one rather than make a 966 something it is not.

I agree, it's not the engine that I worry about its the rear end. Ask how long the ring gear lasts on those 1066's that have been turned up?

IH make great engines but didn't make the trans heavy enough on the 66's or 86's to withstand what the engine could put out if turned up.

If you need just 10hp I'd adjust the fuel injection system. if you need more look for a bigger tractor. The 966 was always a very good tractor - lots of power and torque rise. Could a filter be partically blocked?

M&W made turbo kit for the 966 put on a 1066 fan blade and ran 120hp no problem. The 10s did have a extra oil squirter and a low swirl head like the other guys said.Keep it reasonable it will be OK.

we added a turbo to our 966 several years ago. our planning started a few years before that. one very important part to adding a turbo is to have the upper oil passages drilled out to help with cooling the upper part of the piston. non factory turboed tractors will not have this done.
so when we over hauled the 966 engine the guy doing the work pulled the crank and drilled them out. he also put in a bigger oil pump, bigger fan. later when the turbo was added most of the work was taken care of. the exhaust manifold was moved slightly as the exhaust hole thru the sheet metal had to be moved and a bigger exhaust stack is used. the tractor dynoed 125 hp. you can go higher but for us this was enough. we have had not any problems. also install a pryometer to monitor the exhaust temp. you could melt stuff if you're not careful.
good luck!

Duane

Dan,

I did that with a 966 one time and it worked great; no problems at all.

However, those engines really aren't the same. I thought the same thing until I did a little research.

The 1066's engine was built a bit beefier on the bottom end to withstand the increased power from the git-go. As I recall, the pins, pistons and rods were all stronger.
