What is the difference between the 1256 and the 1456? They have the same motor and look like the same tractor. I don't think they came out the same years , is that the only difference? Don't the 856 have the same motor also, but with out a turbo charger? If you add a turbo charger to a 856 do you have a 1256 or 1456?

1456 boosted 200 more RPM from 2400 to 2600 to raise horsepower to compete with JD's 4420, I belive. Not sure on the JD number, but there was a tractor compared to the 1256 that had more power, so edging into a 1456 put IH back into competition. DT engines have dual oil injectors, larger cooling capacties, and often DT pistons. My IH dealership mechanic said he can get an 856 to 200 horsepower without too much stress, as the engines are able to take it. Some 856's were built with D407's, a simpler engine, and it is not recommended to put a turbo straight on those. That's what I've read, anyway.

The 1256 was DT407, had Cat III hitch, wider bull gears & bigger 14" clutch, 1456 had wider bull gears, better ring & pinion gear set, bigger brakes, 3.5 axles as well bigger or heavier bearings, engine was DT407 with bigger wrist pins, (They say thats what makes a diesel noise is wrist pin flex), inj pump splined drive, 856 was a 806 with D407, had same drive train almost exactly, serial number changes reflect gear tooth angle in power train in entire 756/856 series, transmisions and TA were all the same with a few bearings sizes and matching shafts.

The 1456 has bigger axles and bull gears and different brakes. Orignally only had 1000spd. pto. many have been changed to the dual speed.

Adam No the 806 had the 407CID engine but not 2 oilers to cool the pistons nt as big oil cooler and radiator as 12 different injection lines injectors as 12. 14 was different than 12, 14 had different pump 12 had different rear end than 8 14 some different than 12. can you put turbo on an 8 yes, I put turbos on 806 856 run as much as 155 HP but one needs to use his head a little when you do that.
