I am considering overhauling the C123 engine in a 140. Is there a way to increase the HP? any suggestions or comments welcome. I'd like to get 30 HP out of the tractor. TIA, Tom

Tom, you can get an 3 1/4 overbore kit that will boost your CU to 134. You can also take a little off the head and the block to increase your compression. The C135 engine stock produced 37 hp in 404 Farmall.

Actually he can't if it's an original 140 block. They came from the factory as the equivalent of a C113 block with the 3" to 3 1/8" overbore kit already installed to make it a C123. Without doing custom machine work (and then finding custom parts) the best you can do is either get or save a set of firecrater pistons and use a new set of rings. The aftermarket TISCO pistons have a shorter piston and therefore a lower compression ratio. The good news is that you're not to far from your mark, look at 240 Utility HP numbers. Basically the same motor turning a little higher RPM (2000).

I think you'll find that he can put in thinner sleeves to give a 3 1/4" bore. During the production of the Super A they started fitting the C-123 block (as in the Super C) around 1951 or 1952. They kept the bore at 3" by using very thick sleeves which my 1953 Super A has. So far as I know these blocks and all those following SA-1, 100, 130, and 140 can all be taken out to 3 1/4" with thinner sleeves. Hope this helps. SAm in NS

Sam, that's an understandable assumption that I also had years ago. Just doesn't happen to be true ;) Check the archives, I know I've covered this several times. The early C123 blocks (late Super A, Super A-1, 100, Super C, 200) are as you state (they fit the 3 7/16" lower sleeve OD), the x30 and x40 series are not (back to 3 5/16").

Stan(VA) I have a 1945 B that I oversized, had the bottom of the block drilled for the 3 1/4" sleeves had the head shaved and reworked and turned the governor up to 2000 RPM's put it on dyno turning 33HP at PTO have been pulling this tractor for 7 years with no problems at all. Tom

Yes, Tom. I've done a few also. My point was just to say it isn't as easy as buying the 3 1/4" sleeve set and popping them in. On the early C123 blocks, that can be done easily as an in-chassis overhaul. All the others have to come out and go to the machine shop, then you need to come up with a solution for the O-rings.

Stan I don't know what was used around the bottom of sleeves as they were installed by machine shop when I picked the block up. Have never had a problem with leakage. Good strong engine now. Tom

All the automotive machine shops I talked to don't have the ability to increase the depth of the O-ring grove (the boring machine can't change diameter once down inside a bore), so you either try to sand down the thickness of the O-ring or spec out a new size which is what I do. Your B sounds like a nice tractor!
