Novice question for you..... What makes a Farmall H tractor backfire when you shut it down after a day of running?

My Super M has some awesome backfires. I have a couple carb settings for my uses, like more power or more fuel efficient or lower idle for warm operating temperatures and silage unloading. One night I was heading to my driveway and put the throttle down all the way, coasting in, and it always backfired when I would throttle down. This time it did and put a carbon chunk in my eye. That was enough. I raised the idle and when I thottle down there's just a little more fuel in the engine to keep it from backfiring. As for what you are talking about, all I wanted to say was that one time after unloading silage I stopped and walked off, getting 40 feet away and it did the classic shotgun blast. It was so funny because it had been turned off almost a minute. I also run a 460 and it will backfire a minute or more after we shut it off, and blow the rain cap/damper right off the top. It definately isn't anything to worry about, but the reason it backfires was best explained by Bob.

If you're talking about a loud bang out the muffler upon shutdown, it's from unburned fuel that's dumped into the exhaust manifold as the motor spins down after you kill the ignition. The hot manifold ignites the fuel and results a shotgun-like blast - often delayed until a second or two after the engine stops turning.

Other than the shock value to the operator and anyone standing nearby it's pretty much harmless. You can minimize/eliminate the backfire by letting the motor idle for a couple minutes to cool the manifold before shutting down, then idle it as slow as possible before hitting the switch.

Raw fuel fumes reaching a hot muffler.
