I'm going to covert a Super M from generator to alternator using a Delco with an internal regulater. Should I use a 1 wire or a 3 wire altenator?

go to the articles at the left and find the step by step 12 volt conversion for a M by Bob M. follow the easy instructions and you will be fine.

Today i bought two at a local wrecking yard. The owner was going to give them to me but i gave him a $5 tip. Took to a rebuilder one was good one needed diodes. Will have diodes put in one and use the other as is. I do not like one wire as well because it takes higher RPM to get them started. Anyway the 3 wire is ok for here as it is on a 574 Diesel

Ron,

Either setup will work. Its generally cheaper to buy an alternator with the conventional three wire setup than the "self exciting" one wire setup. You can get a 10SI Delco Remy alternator cheap from most auto parts stores. One of three wires is just a short wire that runs back into the alternator itself from the plug, so actually you're only saving one long wire that you don't have to run from the alternator to the dash of the tractor. For the extra $20 or $30 they want for a one wire alternator, I don't think its really worth it.

Around here (MN) the 1 wire adapter is about $10-$15. Surely simplifies life that way.

Unless you have a key switch with an accessory terminal on it on that tractor then go with the one wire alternator. With the three wire, you have to have some way of shutting the power off to the alternator or the battery will always go dead. You can't use the on-off switch originally on the M because the tractor won't shut down because the alternator will always feed power to the coil. Just my opinion but we get the one wires for $55 here. and they're a lot less hassle to hookup and maintain.

The switch problem is VERY simple. What we do is get a two-terminal oil pressure switch rated so the contacts close at 4-7 PSI. The switch goes into an unused oil gallery port that was previously plugged, or is tee'd into the oil guage line, and switches the excitation voltage to the internal regulator ON while the engine is running, and OFF when it stops. There is no possibility of draining the battery through the alternator, and no problems with distributor equipped engines failing to STOP when the switch is shut off.

I have a 6 volt alternator on my H and it is a 3 wire setup so I took a momentery press toggle switch to the +6 side of the battery(I had to convert to neg ground for alternator to work)and connected that to the field connection of the alternator. That way when you shut the engine off with the momentary switch you dont need to worry about the battery running down.The only trouble I have is sometimes I forget to flick the swich once the engine is running. :)

I converted my super m to 12 volt using the directions in the article on this website. Its the best thing I ever did. I used the diode from radio shack like the article said, to prevent the battery from being drained. Works like a charm. Starts easy as heck every time & never a dead battery.
