Direct start WD6??

A friend has a road grader built on what looks like a WD6 and the gas system is in a 25 year state of disrepair but the diesel runs good. Surely someone on this board has come up with a starter heavy enough to crank it on diesel or knows that it absolutely will not work. He says he can pull start it with a small pickup but if he kills it with the blade in the ground, he has to go get a big farm tractor to start it. Help if you can. Thanks, Scott

The compression ratio on the gas start diesels is only 15 or 16 to one on the diesel side. This is not enough to do a direct start with any kind of dependablity at all. For that you need 20 to 1 compression or more. For the lower compression, some kind of assistance is needed, such as extended pulling, ether, or glow plugs. Not a good idea to use ether on these, but they can be started that way. I doubt you could ever get a strong enough starter to crank them directly from a battery without the ether.

You could probably take the starter to a repair shop and asked them to convert it with a 50% drive reducer. I think that is what they call it. With that and a high CC marine battery, it should start.
I had an MD and it was the same way. It would turn over on diesel, but just wouldn't light up.
